Alright, I just got this in today and have to say that Terry LaGerould's "Baffle Bat" manufactured and distributed by California Magic & Novelty Co. is THE definitive paddle trick of paddle tricks. It simply blows away any paddle trick effect I've ever seen hands down. This was clearly a paddle effect created by professionals for professionals. Its durable, packs small, plays HUGE and will knock magicians as well as lay audiences out of orbit!
My best attempt to describe it is a double-ended, double-sided paddle crafted in black metal which includes six mirrored magnets that you can place on any blade(s) you so desire. Just think of the possibilities of endless routines!? I get confused just practicing but don't take my word for it! Experience the insanity yourself at http://www.calmagic.com/bafflebatscottmov.html and let me know what you think! It's totally sick! |

Hey Richard!
I totally agree! I was so close to purchasing it but I had a problem with credit I was floored when I saw it performed and I can't wait to get my paws on it! Good on you for getting it! Wise choice...but I don't have to telly you that All the best, Logan

Baffle Bat. It is somthing new, something different. Very visual and effective double sided paddle trick.

Looks confusing to me at first. But I tried to look at it from a laymans view and seems not a bad trick after all.

This is one I still perform whenever I remember to since it is one of the oldest effects in my repertoire and I am carrying so much these days.

In my (humble) opinion. "Jumping Gems with Flash Rod" light years more magical.
And probably still under $20.00. I am never without it. (performed it for 30 years) Nala |

Baffle Bat done well blows any other paddle trick away in spades.
My only issue with the trick is that it sometimes appears that the paint used on the "paddle" isn't properly hardened enamel, and that perhaps the manufacturer is in too much of a hurry right after painting to put the magnets in place and package the trick up for shipping. On my most recent version (I've had many) the magnets were "stuck" to the paint, and in the act of getting them loose, the paint came off the paddle, and some of the chrome came off a couple of the magnets. Because of how the trick works, having any particular magnet, or any "side" of the paddle identified with a mark is not really preferable. I would LOVE to get the Baffle Bat in the equivalent quality of something like the "Tenyo Elite" or Joe Porper type of design. If Porper made this...........it would be a machined and anodized black paddle, and heavily chromed magnets. If any small pocket or walk-around effect was truly worth a high-end manufacture, this is it. |

What's the effect called where you use a small black cricket bat and chalk? Anybody? I like John Carney's paddle trick with the dinner knife as well.

It does seem easy enough to have one custom manufactured for personal use though. It would be a dream come true if Porper manufactured this in the craftmanship and quality he is known for. |

You may have touched on the reason my magnets were "stuck" to the paddle Richard.
Perhaps this is (was) very old stock, and the magnets hadn't been moved in years......sort of "baking" themselves onto the regular enamel paint on the paddle? It would be a bit of work to modify a paddle into something a little more high end. One would have to remove the rubber grips, sand the paddle down completely, and then finish it with some sort of baked automotive enamel or super hard lacquer. You'd probably do well to pick up some better magnets, with a much thicker chrome finish......probably from one of the hundreds of online science stores. In the void that is a Porper or Tenyo Elite style version, I may just see what I can do by modifying one of my older Baffle Bats. |

The original paddle came with rubber magnetic spots that didn't cling nearly as well. I'm curious to see what you come up with but this is an effect that has never been shown justice in terms of quality. |

Not to brag (I'm lying, of course this is bragging), but Terry showed this to me in about 1980.
Growing up in Lake Tahoe had its advantages. I'm not able to reach him, and have lost some of the dots/magnets: all the ones I see online are ginormous or neodymium (I don't think his are), or not vinyl. Anybody who OWNS THE TRICK know where I can get them? Thanks!

This one just never gets old. I recently discovered that there was a predecessor called The Skedaddle Paddle from the 1970s with the same design but finished in chrome! Wow!

Rmendez, I think one of your early posts a number of years ago drew my attention to the Baffle Bat. So glad it did! I remember how magical and 'baffling" it looked the first time I saw the demo and it's remained one I really enjoy doing....so a very belated thank you! John

Which came first? Baffle Bat or Skedaddle Paddle? The skedaddle paddle was chrome with magnetic dots as opposed to the black enamel bat.
