Hey guys,
First, this is not an event I'm organizing and have nothing to gain by promoting it. But, since it is something I am really excited about and something I think will be of interest to you card guys, here's the scoop. Bill Abbott is one of the finest performers I have ever seen. His magic is highly entertaining, magical, and downright clever. Cocktail/Banquet magic comprises most of my paid work, as I'm sure it does for most of you (or at least a big portion). It has a very unique set of performing conditions and restrictions that make it both highly rewarding and challenging at the same time. On Saturday, February 9th and Browser's Den in Toronto one of the finest performers I have ever seen will be discussing the ins and outs of performing cocktail/Strolling magic, and presenting some KILLER card work you can do to bring people together, entertain the hell out of them, and do what you need to get hired back. Anyone who loves card work (hence my reason for posting it here) or has an interest in performing engaging and magical pieces in a professional setting should get their tickets now. (Contact Browersden.com, or pay at the door)! Hope to see you all there (feel free to PM me if your coming and we'll all go out for drinks/jamming after!) Ben Train p.s. Here's what some other people have been saying about Bill's NEW Cocktail Magic book (being released for the first time on Saturday!): "Bill Abbott’s Cocktail Card Magic gets my highest recommendation. Bill’s objective is to entertain his audiences, use methods that work under fire and he takes the responsibility of making magic fun very seriously. His advice about working walk-around gigs is advice I think everyone should read. It’s worth the much more than the price of the book. The three routines are all top notch and it’s easy to see that they have been polished over thousands of performances. The one issue I have with the book is that Bill decided to dedicate it to Bob Sheets and not me. If you can overlook that, buy this book." -Bill Malone "I love this book. Bill has nailed the essence of that often awkward position we have to fill. His words of advice on how to handle yourself in that (sometimes) uncomfortable situation of cocktail magic, is worth the price of the book and the routines are inspired. I love it that Bill has figured out that the trick is not the thing... but that it is the 'ringmaster of fun' that is the real reason for us being there. I hope that this way of thinking inspires more of the workers out there to pack lots of visual and fun magic into a short window." -Doc Eason "Bill Abbott's "Cocktail Magic" is one of the finest values available today for the working, walk around performer. Bill's theory on performing in a cocktail environment is worth ten times the price of the booklet. I have been working cocktails for over 15 years and I still learned some very valuable information from Bill's Booklet that I will apply directly to my craft. The effects in the manual are absolute killers. Each effect contains a script, funny lines, great bits of business and smart psychology. The effects are all instantly repeatable with little or no reset, which is of prime importance for the working pro. Bottom line, if you are at all interested in the field of Cocktail Magic, either as a beginner or as a seasoned pro...GET THIS BOOK!” -Richard Sanders "Bill Abbott has finally drawn important distinctions regarding performing in cocktail-party settings, doing it succinctly, concisely, and with clarity and good humor. The way this book looks and reads immediately draws you in and makes you care about the 'right stuff' for the right people' in the 'right places.' Add "sharp focus" (your own), stir gently, and serve." -Jon Racherbaumer

Hey,
It occured to me since this thread is really going to be of interest for cocktail workers, I will throw-out a question. How do you open? Let me clarify- before you do a trick (assuming you don't start off with one. If you do, I would love to hear about it!) what do you say, and what is your objective, when approaching a group? For instance, My objective is to bring 2 separate groups (or more) together and get them laughing. Then I often use a joke that is tailored towards the specific function (overtime I've developed a few that are sort of interchangeable with specific functions, like weddings or corporate banquets) that explains who I am and why I'm there. After that, I figure I can open with almost anything (I have criteria for opening material, but that's not the point of this discussion). What about you? Do you agree? Disagree? I would love to hear your thoughts! Ben

I'll start with a trick which requires participation (in one form or another) from two or more spectators. I more or less get right into it by saying I was asked by [insert name of important person] to show you some magic making it more difficult to say no. When I reach the the point where I need a second spectator, I'll "notice" someone nearby and ask them if they wouldn't mind helping.
I think that it's important that the audience respect you right off the bat. Make sure you take advantage of any and all opportunities to point out the sophistication and higher education you possess (for instance if you hear spectators, speaking using things such as double negatives and split infinitives, you should correct them immediately in a condescending manner, to put them in their place and show who's boss.) You should also adopt the use of the recently invented gender-neurtral pronouns (zi, hir, etc). Even though the audience will have no idea what you are saying or who you are saying it too, they'll leave knowing that they met someone much more intelligent and worldly than themselves. |
