I wish there was a sort of joint forum involving books and DVDs, but I figure I'll ask it here...
Which DVDs would you recommend purely to study principles? For instance, I don't know that there's a single routine I'd be able to use off Max Maven's Videomind, but the routines in the series are RICH when it comes to seeing specific principles in use. Eugene Burger's Magical Voyages is great for seeing the different sorts of presentational permutations that are available. Tommy Wonder's Visions of Wonder has some great stuff dealing with conflict in magic. The School for Scoundrels DVDs all cover different aspects of psychological deception. etc. etc. Other ones I can think of... Darwin's Encyclopedia of Thumb Tip Magic, Allan Zingg's Master Billet Course, Carney on Palming, Carney on Ramsay, Michael Ammar's Cups and Balls, Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Money Miracles Vol 3 (Bill to Impossible Location ideas), Al Schneider Technique Vol 1, etc. Any other suggestions? The important thing isn't so much that the DVDs have good routines on them, but that the DVDs represent a thorough examination of a principle or given set of principles. |

I thought the Levant Salt Pour was a through look at that effect. You get the gimmick and DVD. DVD explains the history and many types of handling for this effect. Highly praised in reviews here on the Café.

Rafael Benatar's Cups & Balls DVD.
Excellent resource for not only moves but psychology of moves. He goes into depth on "In Transit Action" a principle that can be used in all of magic. This DVD is a real education in sleight of hand.

Relatively new one (Nov 2007)
Kostya Kimlat's "Roadrunner Cull". While perhaps not a "principle", it has a wealth of information on the cull, how to master it, and gives you some, and leads you on a road to more uses for culling than you ever thought possible. In that vein, Rocco's "The Basics of Sleeving" is really good too. Then of course, you have the Royal Road DVD(s), and The Bobo coin DVDs (and books for both) which are a set of principles and fundamentals in those arts as well. Books on tape (okay, disc)....

The Vernon Revelations Tapes! He explains his thinking behind everything and gives you a real insight into the Vernon Touch even he's no longer able to do some of the material (unfortunately, he does so in a rather schizophrenic way so you have to have a lot of patience)

You forgot John Carney's two dvds that go along with his Book of Secrets (incredible book, by the way).

So far the suggestions involve card magic, close-up and mentalism. My I humbly suggest my "Dennis Loomis Doll House... Plus" DVD for an in-depth discussion of principles of stage illusions? Here's the link to it:

reel magic quarterly in every episode looks at priciples of performing with garrett thomas...also jon armstrong also talks about priciples of card magic...an inexpensive way to take alook at this stuff...were going to ad maybe 2 more of those type of things to each issue over the next 2 or 3 issues...dont know if this helps but I tried koz |

It's not a DVD, but it is a good study in principles.
Dondrake has written several books and lecture notes on the principles of Black Art. Some people agree with his principles, others disagree. But you can't argue with the amount of thought and principles that Dondrake has put into this form of magic. Until we appear again, Kipp Sherry |

Paul Harris's Art Of Astonishment Books and DVD's, Tommy Wonder's "Books Of Wonder" and his L&L Videons Of Wonder DVD set. David Regals PREMISE POWER & PERCEPTION DVD set is awesome. The Vernon Revelation DVD's, Eugene Burger's new DVD Exploring Magical Presentations is an absolute must have on the subject.
And... Reel Magic Quarterly ( http://www.reelmagicquarterly.com ) has incredible segments dedictated to studying principles. This DVD is only about $10 and should sell for $50. There is so much out there.

I can't believe I forgot John Lovick's Switch.
Chris, can you be specific about what principles are covered in Reel Quarterly and the Regal PPP series? |

I was surprised that he taught it on Reel Magic Quarterly #1. I feel it could have been released on a DVD as a stand alone piece, ala Kevin King's Money Morph. Garrett Thomas's "Try This At Home" on the Reel Magic Quarterly DVD's are gold. I think my favorite has been on #3. His advice on knowing when to talk and when to stop will help every performer. I know I mention Reel Magic Quarterly everywhere, but I really believe this has given magic a huge boost forward. When Magicians become better performers ( it doesn't have to be paid gigs ) it helps everyone in the community.

To be clear, I was talking about John Lovick's book called "Switch: Unfolding the $100 Bill Change". The reason I wanted to include it was that the book is a treasure of methods, effects and principles directly related to the bill switch.
Again, I have to ask, what principles are covered in Reel Quarterly and David Regal's PPP series? There are plenty of good resources out there, but I want to focus on those that act like textbooks on specific principles. |
