I've stumbled upon a great BOR item. I perform the sucker egg trick in my show. At the end, I sell a plastic egg, 6" silk, and instructions that I printed up (I purchased the items from D. Robbins). I sell them for $5, and my total cost is about $.85. It does not teach them the sucker ending.
I stumbled on this because I already sell items after the show and everyone always asked if they could buy the plastic egg. I decided to try it, and I've sold-out every single time. I think it sells so well because it is perceived as a real magic trick. I've also found that items I demo sell much better. Since this is a "real" routine, it makes the audience want to buy it that much more. This is an item that has increased the sales of my other items, too. I've bundled this with a Svengali, Nickels to Dimes, and DVD for $25. It increases the sales of my full package as well. Give it a try. I think you'll find it is a top seller! |

Brock,
COOL idea!!! Where do you get your Svengali decks???? Cost??? A good source of material is the Dollar Store, Zone, whatever you call them in your area. You can package an effect for as little as a dollar, with a HIGH perceived value, and like magicians that buy ready packaged routines with props, so will the lay public. As an example (I do not sell this), I need "Skippy" made up with a different "look" for one of my shows, it is a cut and restored effect. At the dollar store I am able to make them up with enough gimmicks for 10-20 uses. This is a dealer's item with a sell price of around $25.00. Now THAT is a return! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

Blair,
Thanks for the dollar store idea. I have to admit I'm somewhat "lazy" when it comes to BOR items. I like prepackaged and ready to go, or very simple to assemble. I sell several thousand units of each item per year and it gets time consuming to produce and package the items. I buy the Svengalis from Loftus or Magic City. I think they are around $.60 each. Royston, it is clear from my routine that the "sticker kicker" is not what I'm selling. Just the silk to egg. No complaints so far. |
