I'll be there. Missed last years, so looking forward to coming back for a full day of magic! I'm excited about attending the Bob White lecture. I attended an all-day seminar by Mr. White, about 4-5 years ago, and it was very good. I am hoping that with 4-5 more years of working under my belt, I will get even more out of his teachings this time.
Also, all my lame magic buddies bailed on me - so I will be going solo this year. So if you are going, please come say hi to me, so that I can create the illusion of having friends. Thank you.

I may try to get to this! This would be my first convention, I am seventeen, do you think that it would still be a good time even though I am probably younger than most? Adam

Adam,
You will definitely meet some people around your age. Also, it doesn't matter how old you are, you can still learn the same things in the lectures that an old man like me can learn. This year is a great lineup and there will be things you learn from the lecturers that you can use the rest of the time you are interested in magic. Brian |

I'm really looking forward to sitting down to the Evening Show and getting whacked with a giant whizzing balloon upside my head. Ah, good times.

On 2008-03-09 22:13, Spinnato wrote: Well, since you asked, I s’pose I’ll give a few thoughts on this year’s convention… David London: Wow – this is one eccentric dude! Not suprisingly, I overheard some mixed reactions to David. I heard one random convention go-er stating “entertainment – that’s what you don’t see enough of these days, that kind of originality”, while a friend of mine stated to me, when I asked his thoughts on Mr. London after the evening show, “I didn’t like it – I just didn’t get it”. I actually liked his evening show finalé a great deal. Although his morning show’s Wonder Bread routine left me waiting for a climax (or any magic effect at all, really), I ended up feeling very inspired by David’s commitment to originality, intelligent humor and very unique presentation. The Great Tomsoni & Co.: Certainly the highlight of the day for me. Mr. Thompson is an incredibly funny and talented performer, and watching his evening show act was an excellent lesson in the power of being entertaining in ways other than technical prowess (although he was technically excellent as well, of course). To use a much-overused phrase in magic - I honestly feel that watching this performance was “worth the price of the convention”. Cards: This year’s NEMCON kinda made me hate cards more than I already did. Ok, that’s not entirely true – I don’t HATE cards. Matter of fact, I do a quick ACR and Card to Wallet routine weekly at the restaurants - but that is really the ONLY card effect I do regularly, and I only do that one because I own a JOL wallet from Wizardcraft and I believe it would be a sin to leave that wallet on the shelf. So yes, my opinion might be influenced by my personal preferences, but that’s kinda what makes it an opinion, right? Anyway, I felt the morning show and first few lectures, were incredibly card-heavy. A couple other magicians that I spoke to shared the same feelings as me on this matter. If I had to watch one more person count down cards and stop whenever they wanted, I believe my head would have exploded and decks upon decks of cards would have rapidly shot out of my neck like a human Card Fountain. Charlie Hayden: Very, very funny guy. The beer production was AWESOME! Other thoughts: New venue next year – sure hope the seats are comfy (am I the only one whose backside is numb by lecture #2? Maybe I need to stop attending every lecture). I enjoyed David Garrity more than I typically enjoy the illusionist performances. No whizzing balloons before the evening show – cool! There is a lot to learn from Bob White. I happily spent 90% of my dealer room time, parked in from of Craig Dickson’s Wizardcraft booth, admiring the fine items that for the most part, I can’t afford. One final thought: Going back to the card comment – I think the thing that was lacking a bit this year, was diversification. Year’s past have seemed more diverse, to me. I think there are enough family/kid’s show workers in attendance, that permanently designating one of the lecture spots to a family/kid’s show performer, would make good sense (and this would inherently create a break from card material!) Thanks to SAM Assembly #127 for putting this together. See ya next year.

Hi Danny,
Thank you for your nice comments about my work. It was nice meeting you, and I am glad you felt inspired. I am aware that some people don't get what I do. Truthfully, whether people like it or not, if my work makes magicians think about magic just a bit, then it has accomplished its basic task. Regarding my Wonder Bread presentation, you should know that I was only scheduled to perform 15 minutes in the close-up show. I performed my regular set (Outside the Box, Toenails, The excerpt from The Adventure to the Imagi Nation and the Train of Thought). Towards the end, you may remember that I was pulled aside and asked to perform another 15. Wonder Bread was the last remaining thing in my "bag of tricks." The routine is the newest in my repertoire and I continue to try and figure out exactly what it is. I embraced the sudden opportunity to play around and see what happens. I had some amazing conversations with many people at the conference about the piece, especially Ronald Wohl, with whom I entered into a great dialogue with about the piece. This conversation has since continued via e-mail. I am greatful to all those who offered comments and suggestions about everything I performed, and the Wonder Bread piece in particular. If one can not embrace such opportunities to explore and grow, than what is the point of doing them at all. I look forward to sharing the evolution of the piece in the future as it morphs and expands. I cannot say what it will become, only that I am willing to look at it from every possible angle to determine how to maximize the effect of every given moment. Once again, thank you for your comments, and I look forward to when our paths will cross again soon. Best Regards, David London http://www.magicalthinking.net |

I certainly feel it has a ton of potential as a piece and you had a lot of funny bits built in already, but felt a little unfulfilled at the end. I think it's a natural feeling and thought, to wonder "where is this going?", when watching a piece. I had the same feeling when watching your Evening Show finalé - but the difference in that one, was that you apparently ended things again with the absence of any real effect - only to have Mr. Hayden come out and hit us all with the magical climax to the routine (which I thought was very clever and original).
