A bar hires you to perform at an event and you charge them your usual price. Let's assume they pay you $500 per hour (although the actual price is not important)
The same bar is so impressed with your work they want to hire you to perform every week for a year. How much do you question them based on the previous quote? |

Not sure I understand your question. Are you asking if you give a lesser rate/ hour because of the multiple booking?

Getting guaranteed work for a year -I would offer a lower rate maybe 350-400 dollars as has happened a few times with venues etc..

If you can continue to get your full rate, then go for it...
But if they request a discount based on repeated guaranteed performances (or you think that that may close the deal), then certainly give it to them... Usually, let them mention a figure, but if they don't, a 10-20% discount would be an acceptable starting figure.

Excuse me, but could someone point me the way to a bar that pays $500.00 an HOUR? Failing that, I'd take directions to the 350-400 an hour. Please, guys, let's be a little more realistic and honest in our examples. It's fine to get this amount once in a while, but to make it seem like this amount is the going rate is ridiculous. Eric Paul's recent teleseminar with DJ Ehlert on Restaurants quoted prices around the $50.00 an hour, which sounds way more accurate and realistic.

Thanks guys!
John - if you had actually read the original post before butting in with your arrogant post you would have seen that I clearly stated that "the actual price is not important" as I was interested only in what sort of percentage discount people might give. |

Many restaurant workers will tell you the only real advantage to working the restaurant in the first place is a constant showcase and a way to book other shows.
Almost nobody will charge a recurring show the exact same rate as a single isolated date. Common sense. BUT many factors come into play. Will you book other dates from this, are tips involved, how far is it from home, and so forth. You indicate only one of what can literally be hundreds of different factors in an equasion. My inclination is to discount for volume yes. An exact number depends on far more than just a repeat weekly gig.

"although the actual price is not important"
This is VERY relevant to the question. If you are paid anywhere around the figure you indicated than you can do whatever you want with the price, you could even RAISE it, as you will have to "give up many of your reguler devoted customers" and they "will be disappointed in not being able to have you". So hit them for an increase. THEY want to tie you in, and YOU are unique, WHY settle for less??? THEY pay more!! If you are using an overly fictitious price above, then going down many give you a less than living income, or be undercutting the market in your area. Do you really want to do this? Plumbers make $65.00 an hour up here (Montreal), home appliance and heat pump repair charge $125.00 for the first hour, EVEN if there is nothing to replace or fix. Are you worth less???? So what I am saying is that if you truly are unique, don't offer something you are not being asked to (a discount). We are all too worried about cutting the price and/or losing out on a show. But is the show worth getting?? Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

The other approach is to charge the same price, but give them more for their money.
That could be - help with promotion, longer show etc. |

Some places, as mentioned in your post, may only pay $50 an hr, etc. If you're good and work for that money, you're doing yourself and working pros a disservice. Cheers |

Now it's 500-1000 MINIMUM for a HALF HOUR (1/2)!!!!! YEAH! Exaggeration doesn't help anyone, either.

Nick didn't make it clear whether it was a strolling gig (lower pay per hour) or a stand-up / stage show. If it was a stand-up / stage show, then those fees might be appropriate. I know performers who do stand-up shows in bars, comedy clubs, certain restaurants, etc.

That's absolutely true, Donald. 500 for stand up is entirely possible. The original question was based on an hour, so I was assuming it to be close-up.

500 possible? What do you mean, and where are you working? If you are only getting $500 for a one-off show for an hour (probably too long--40-45 minutes would be a better time) you should be getting at least $500 depending on the gig and if you present a professional show.
$500 sounds more like a lower-end, half-hour, one-person basic show. Dependent upon venue. Talking stand up show, not strolling. John J |

John,
Maybe if you changed your image from a typical magician in a tux to who you really are, you might get higher fees. When we do what we always have done, we will get what we have always gotten! $500 for a half hour show (walk around or otherwise) is a low figure. The reason it's a low figure and why I don't take those shows is because I'm viewed as a commodity while my competitors (you) are viewed as "dime-a-dozen" magician. Therefore, I can charge whatever I want. Instead of appealing to the masses like you, I focus on one type of client because I know I work best with the people in this industry. Once you realize who your "niche" is and you become the "go to guy" for entertainment, your fees will sky-rocket. You might want to take a look at Michael Port's book, "Booking Yourself Solid." My discount would be dependent on what day of the week it is. I don't work too much during the week. So, if it were weekday work, I would be willing to give up to a 25% discount. If it was a weekend, no more than a 15% discount.

$500 for a half hour show is fine if that is where the person is at in their career. In fact, they can make a pretty decent living if they have volume. Plus, $500 is more than most Paramedics in San Diego make in a whole day, let alone half an hour.
