I hate corset movies, but my wife dragged me to see Sense and Sensibility, and I now own it. Not my favorite movie....but by far the biggest surprise.

The Terminator.
I can still remember, my friends and I went to see a movie called "Joysticks" which was some kind of teen romp, T&A type movie based on the video game craze. But for some reason we decided to walk into the Terminator. I had no idea what it was about or anything. And it was awesome.

"Franklin did this; Franklin did that; Franklin did some other d**n thing! Franklin smote the ground, and out sprang George Washington, fully grown and oh his horse... Franklin then electrified him with his miraculous lightning rod, and the three of them -- Franklin, Washington, and the horse -- conducted the entire Revolution all by themselves." An actual quote. I suspect that the quote came after the revolution was won, but still, that's a farsighted thing to say. That was pretty much exactly how my grade-school history course described it. My favorite unplanned movies were: The Stunt Man (an all-time favorite. I liked Peter O'Toole in this even more than in My Favorite Year.) Harold and Maude Yojimbo (I just didn't know about Kurosawa. I got a very good education afterwards) Dead Again Real Genius Local Hero Slap Shot Henry V (Kenneth Branagh version) The Cheap Detective Bill |

Jurassic Park, when I was three when It was released onto VHS ( DVD wasn't Around in '93) Anyway my cousin brought it in, I had no idea what it was about, but the sight of the Brachiosaur walking onto the screen in the first 30 minutes of the film was breathtaking in my opinion and still remains to this day a favorite movie scene of mine.

Many years ago, "Chariots of Fire". The only movie I've ever seen in a theater where everyone sat through the closing credits and didn't get up to walk out until the screen went dark.

I just 'Tropa de Elite' recently, and it was pretty good. This Brazilian action movie / thriller is about BOPE (Special Police Operation Battalion), an elite group of the Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It's a Great House in Kent called Groombridge and we had stayed in it for several days when doing a historical reenactment tour of England several years ago. We slept in the old servant quarters on the top floor and pretty much had the run of the place. It's a great house with a great hall and moat as well as the house you saw in the movie. Wonderful gardens as well. It's also the house they used in the Pete Greenway film The Draughtsman Contract.

Trashy guilty pleasure. I saw a film called "Hardbodies 2" (Actually before I saw "Hardbodies.") Trashy film about a couple of kids running into the characters from the first film on a cruise to Greece.
What made the film stand out is that the film is actually about a group of actors trying to MAKE "Hardbodies 2!" So you've got two different stories going on depending on whether your watching a the actors playing actors shooting a movie or the actors playing actors playing the charcters IN the movie. I'm going to go lie down now.

If flipping through the cable channels and accidently finding a great movie counts, then my choice is "Nobody Knows" (2004).
It is gut wrenching to watch. Probably the greatest "horror movie" I have ever seen; and there is no blood, or vulgar violence. The horror is sublte. If you have a heart, you will watch this movie in horror and only keep watching to see what happens next. (it is a Japanese movie, so if you don't mind reading sub-titles, its a great flick.)

When I saw the move "The Heathers" I remember thinking it was an amazing piece of work. I guess it still stands up. Wynonna and Christen had a great chemistry. The movie was totally surreal and that was its' value. A movie about two people who are really crazy isn't usually as good.
