This isn't on the street because it was about 30 degrees outside, but I got my kid to record this. Give me suggestions and (gentle) critisims (sp)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5GShQtRTCo (I would have posted the Cups and Balls trick that I refer to at the same time, but I didn't like the way it came out. It's going to have to be reshot.)

Okay.... now clearly you are a stunning man and people will want to see those rugged Rhode Island good looks but here is the problem, the trick is one that requires the entire rope be seen. You have a gag where the knot isn't centered, how can the viewer tell if they only see eight inches of rope below the knot and two feet above it? The camera needs to back off to put it simply. Other than that it was fine for what it was.

About half the time I couldn't see the effects because the rope wasn't in full view of the camera.
STEP WAY BACK from the camera so that people can see the full length of your body and the full length of the rope at all times. that way people will be able to follow the illustrations of the story your telling. if your gonna be silly, maybe you should use silly music. work on your acting skills, really believe that something has gone wrong or strange or what ever. REALLY BELIEVE THE MAGIC. the last trick was great! it got me....probably because I could see the the rope the whole time. keep up the good work. |

What you stayed in because it was mere 30 degrees outside!!!??? Where has dedication to art gone?
Camera work aside (after all this isn't a film forum) I'd agree with Jimmy, the delivery of the patter was a bit mechanical, maybe you work better in front of an audience, but it should seem that the patter is comming out naturally, and you should be trying to react to your audience more. The magic was fine. I would have stopped and watched it on the street. I may just be guessing but from some of your other movements I really think this would have looked a whole lot different if we had seen you filmed before a real audience. You seem to be prepared to react to the audience, but it wasn't there and throwing off ur performance a bit. Jimmy is right when he says "believe in the magic" if you don't, they won't.

Yep...try backing up so the whole rope can be seen. And, as Jimmy mentioned, the ending got me too.
Keep on keeping on and have fun! Mark. |

Pretty darn good. I liked it. It's hard performing without an audience and I thought you handled it pretty well.

Thank you one and all. I'll work on getting "crowd footage" this season. I was concerned about most of the points made here. I really didn't want the camera pulling back too far because frankly, I'm not interested in showing off my living room. I also was stunned at how bad my acting was, I used to be better than that. (It may well have been the lack of an audience... or there well may be a good reason why I left NYC and came back to RI! )
I was also concerned that if we showed the whole rope, you wouldn't be able to see the knots because the distance would make them too small! Well, live and learn. I'm cheesed that the Cups and Balls footage didn't come out better, I'll try again, I'll let everyone know when that's ready. (Mind you, it's going to be real "low key" I haven't got the chops to do Gazzo's routine.)

Don't worry about the camera work. What matters is how you came accross. Your audience will see the whole rope. We don't need to see the whole rope. We just need to see your presentation. You did just fine. Sure it needs some tweaking. The beginning was a bit slow. Took a while to get started. It takes balls to put up a video clip and you've just passed over a huge hurdle. You're "in the club". Do you see lots of others "in the club"? No, you don't. So if anyone tells you you're no good, tell them to post their video clip or @#$^@$%^@$%^@#$%^#$%^#@$%^#$%^#$%^#$%^.

Thanks, I think I will reshoot this after I reshoot the C&Bs, and try to tone down the presentation a bit. It does come off really stilted.
Thanks again for the support Frank.

Music is great in a clip I just think you should choose a song that fits the mood of the show.

I went back to listen to the music, I have hearing difficulties so I didn't notice it at all first time around. The music absolutely does not fit the routine and I don't think it is needed at all on a verbal driven presentation. That music might work on a fast paced stage illusion with no talking, other than that it isn't even good music.

This rope trick could be great for crowd build but your presentation will be best perfected on the streets. If you will perform this on the streets for a day all tow then record it you will come across like a god. don't be tempted to get it spot pefect before you take it out on the streets let the streets teach you. What ever practise behind closed doors will be diffrent on the street. You need a live audiance that you and they can interact with. Only then will you see how strong your caracter is, then belief in what you are doing will grow stronger. Thier is no better training ground and remember it is not performers you want to entetain but the public. Mario |

Thanks. I've got a couple of spots I use. Thayer St., although a police lt. there gave me a hassle, and the food kiosk between a merry go round and a playground. (Very good spot.) Two other ideas have occured to me. The local rapid transit company runs a ferry from Providence to Newport. I wondered if I could get permission to perfrom for the crowd waiting for the ferry... also we have two theatres Trinity Repretory and Providence Performing Arts Center (P-PAC). I wondered if I could do the intermissions. We'll see.

Mandrake, there is a saying that says "It is far better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission." Why not just set up and start one day, it the transit authority or the cops say something then just tell them "oops, sorry did't know.
How do I go about getting permission?" Then if it is a no-no you're a good guy for asking how to do it. If no one says anything you got yourself a money maker. |
