I'm glad to see that others have posted about high-quality, inexpensive magic for kids. It wasn't so much that I was disappointed at seeing crappy magic stuff out there - heck, when I was a kid there was just as much bad stuff, if not more - but that a famous and well-respected magician would loan his name to crap and not insist that it be made well.

I do have a complaint about the card box: the flap in the one I got has a big, very noticeable flaw in the plastic. Anyone who looked at the real bottom of the box and then looked at the bottom with the flap in place could easily tell that something had changed, just because of that flaw. |

You would be surprised to know how many magicians I fooled with this little trick. Thanks, Richard |

Remember guys, you're not going to get anything good if you're buying a kid's magic set - but the kids might love 'em.

Someone mentioned the "magic in a minute" toys. I love them! I bought a few for my nieces and nephews, and a few for myself as well! Good quality moulding and plastic workings, and the whole product line is very well themed. Good job Mac and Co.!

When I was 12 my parents gave me a Hokus Pokus Magic Set.
It was of good quality but did have a few junk items thrown in for good measure and the metal TT was too fat and short to be of any use to anyone but most of the props where well made (heavy plastic) and worked the way they were supposed to. It had the best penetration frame I have ever owned, not like the cheap flimsy pieces of junk that are sold today. My Golden Penetration frame by Circle Magic is no better made than that plastic frame was in the Hokus Pokus set. Iven

There was a wooden illusion box on the platform - blades went in at odd angles after the assistant got in and the top hinged down. Was kind of across from Tannen's and a block or so downtown from the Burger King.

OK, was it one of these? These are two of at least three sets I found on ebay.

Well who are you buying the set for, and what can you get for comparable money now?
I mean realy most magic sets are for very young children right? They are going to lose pieces, break stuff, lose instructions and so forth like kids do with EVERYTHING. I am just not sure what people expect for 10 bucks any more.

I occasionally pick up a magic set on an online auction -- mostly unused with only one or two tricks opened. Some are neat and some are crap. I plan to build shadowbox displays for friends, but occasionally there is a real 'find' like 1950's tricks with 39 cent stickers on them. So, I am happy if I find one good, usable effect in an entire box -- but nothing like my original 1932 Gilbert Set from my Dad.
I have always wondered how they decide what tricks to include -- what kind of research or whimsey guides the choice.

I wish I had known about Mac King's line years ago when they were still available. There are some really fun ideas there. I love the mummified monkey finger, the monkey brain ball vase, and the crate O mystery. I would probably use the first two myself.
