I don't really understand what the fuss is about with the X Deck and Buckshot setups. To me, these attempt to solve a non-existent problem by drastically reducing the versatility of the deck. With Buckshot, you need to use two decks. So the deck you are going to use can't be out before the trick begins, which I think is one of the strongest aspects of the ID. With the X deck handling, you can't perform the effect to the same crowd ever again. It is a one time shot, which might be fine for street assassins, but not for those of us that do strolling or table hopping where you may run into repeat customers.
The "problem" these two approaches seem designed to "solve" is the spectator who might think you performed slight of hand to turn the named card over as you spread the deck. Having performed the ID many many times, I have never run into this as an issue. I think a very slow and deliberate handling negates any hint of slight of hand. But even if one of your spectators did think you used slight of hand, so what? You are a magician. Are you also concerned that they might think your ambitious card routine is accomplished through slight of hand? To me, these two approaches are a step backwards for the ID, and rather than enhance the effectiveness, severely limit its versatility. |

I'm a table hopper and I use the X deck handling all the time. How do you handle repeat customers? Don't do the same trick for them. I always ask people if I've done magic for them before, if I don't recognize them, that is. If I have, I make sure to do new stuff for them.
This is not a step back as far as I'm concerned. It's just an interesting presentation.

The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.
