Quizzmo - you make some valid points.
I'd like to hear other people's opinions on the juggler as well. This should have been the easiest job at the convention. (usually the juggler kills at a magic convention and a magician kills at a juggling convention right?). But this guy left me a little flat. He had some good lines and I like the Unicyling a lot, but his screechy voice and loud "persona" I did not care for. |

Yes I did John and it was a good lecture and it highlighted some of those issues. Then again you are a different type of entertainer yourself. You reach into the depths of the soul with wild abandon and let it all hang out, throwing all the conventions of rule to the wind. That makes what you do for your audience special, it's something different, off-beat, more personalized. They come away from your performance knowing that they really got their value for the time/money spent.I saw it amongst your group and proteges as well. I have a picture of your young friend in the towel at the front desk that is priceless. Wish it was video, it was worth a shot on Americas Funniest as he hula'd at the the front desk. LOL But, that is what real entertainment is all about. In two words Carpe Diem.

I thought he was looking for adult volunteers for the 'getting up on the unicycle' bits...so I ran up on stage and tryed to help, cuz he was asking for volunteers, and wasn't getting any, AND wasn't specifying age while he was on stage (that was the time that I decided to volunteer). Then, I meet him on the steps and whisper to hime that I'd help (thinking that I WAS HELPING a fellow juggling entertainer...that's right folks, I'm a juggler too). Then he starts asking for kids once he gets into the audience, and I'm left up there feeling awfully squeemish. Well, I made the most unobtrusive exit that I could think of...and still when we got back to the hotel, I catch $h!t from someone that I don't know and who doesn't know me...and then I thought Big DC wanted to drag me out into the parking lot by the way he looked at me, so I shot him the crazy eyes back....sorry bro, but I felt like you were part of a lynch mob at the time. Anywho, I changed clothes and tried to lay low for the rest of the night and left early the next day...I had family obligations. So, to whomever that juggler is/was. Sorry I shang-highed your stage. It was unintentional. I think my newfound set of buddies that I was sitting with made the impression that I was more rascally that I actually was. I just jogged back to my seat and tried not to look embarrased was all. They cheered me like a returning war vet. Not my fault. Well, I have been reading all these Magi-Fest threads, waiting for someone to complain about that incident, hoping no-one would. But now I am without guilt for I have exposed it myself and told my side. If you do not remember the incident at all, then good. I did not intentionally try to become a part of the show other than to help a fellow juggler out whom I thought needed a lift onto his unicycle...and most guys with suicycles do. He planned on giving knives to kids and I hadn't anticipated that. That was a first for me. If you still bare me ill will after reading this, then blast away. My conscience in now clear, so I may not be back to check this thread. I'm not on this site very much these days any more. There are far "greener" pastures for me...well, they're actually more gray/blue than green...but that's the color for the original analogy, though it actually fogs the true meaning. Oh well. Fire at will gents. |

Nah, I didn't have any heat with ya. We thought it was hoot. But Steve Kline thought you were part of my crew and chewed me out first. Water under the bridge...

John,
I did not chew you out - rather asked if he was a part of your "crew" -after the way your guys acted the previous year, it was an assumption -Do not assume, ASK ! As for Chad - While I appreciate you "coming forward", however, I feel alcohol had a good deal to do with it as well - not my opinion, I was backstage on the headset trying to figure why a guy was simply standing on stage - rather the voice of many in attendance at the show. But like John said, "water under the bridge"..... Michael, I would love to see your site - and maybe a few creditials before I comment. I too have been to a few events this past year - in fact, many more than 8 ( for those of you who know my schedule )and do realize that things need to be improved upon but slamming a hotel because of a wake up call - come on man - Alarm clock, a buddy in the comp, your cell phone - being a pro, this can not be the only time you have had to get up early for an event..... enough for now until I have a chance to see who I am dealing with... Best, Steven

I have performed for, competed at and attended many conventions, and Steve Kline does a bang up great job and John Pyca I enjoyed working with you too. Quizzmo I have been to some that struck be bad too and returned the next year only to experience a totally new thing. There is a lot of stress on the competition participants the event is way too early and close up is really stand up etc. But I love going and I hope that you might give Magi Fest another try someday I am sure you would have a better experience.

One should be a little defensive. I've been to a ton of conventions in the last 4 years and Magi-Fest is consistently the best. Does it have hghs and lows? Sure. It's impossible to please everyone all of the time, but overall these guys do an awesome job on this conventuon. That's why it is one of the largest most attended conventions in the country.! As for the hotel - I travel a lot and stay in a lot of hotels too, and had no problems with the hotel at all! Top notch all the way. |

I realize that a lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into such a project and I commend Ron, Jep and all who put together Magi Fest. I take nothing away from the effort. And yes someday I might return.
As far as the sound I was referring to the barn where the headliner show was performed on Friday night. I don't think SoundWorks themselves could have brought it to life. The acoustics had something to be desired. As far as sound at the lectures etc. Steve and his gang did a great job, hey I got my MacBook Pro back in one piece and no problems, that's a plus. Regarding the hotel and my professionalism I take a certain degree of offense. As a Priority Club member who averages 150 to 180 nights a year in hotels I have grown accustomed to a certain degree of service for the price I pay. When a chain guarantees a service such as a wake-up call (which Crown PLaza does) I have a certain expectation of their reliability. As I came alone I knew virtually no one at the conference and no one seemed to go out of their way to approach me as has been the case at all the other conferences. As far as my Creditials (thats right it's spelled CREDENTIALS) lets just say I've been around the block and then some Steve. I grew up wandering the stage of a grand old Supper Club that my Grandfather owned called the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill New Jersey where such nominal entertainers and talents such as Frank Sinatra, Jackie Wilson, Barbara Striesand, Marvin Gaye graced the stage. I started my own career as broadcaster in Philadelphia and have worked a number of large market 50k stations over the years. As far as sound work I've a list that includes Live-Aid at JFK, The Nashville Songwriters Tour with John Ford Coley, Terry Sylvester of the Hollies, and Henry Gross of Sha Na Na. I worked extensively in the 80's with revival of the Philly Doo Wop Sound and such groups as the Drifters, Coasters, Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker and more. And I am about to enter my 7th year as a Saturday night headliner at the Jersey Shore that fills a 600 seat dinner club to capacity week after week and I work on average 300 nights out of the year. I think I've earned my Professional Chops in my thirty plus years as an entertainer. Yes that is thirty years as a full-time working (non-starving) live entertainer. As far as a site is concerned, that's my wife department. I'm too buzy entertaining my audiences to beat my chest so I let her do all the promotional work. Check out her My Space it's called The Magicians Wife. If you need a resume before determining a value to my observations I'll be glad to send you one. Until then take my thoughts not as a personal affront but as enlightenment in the pursuit of the betterment of the Magical Arts and the way they are presented. |

Well said !
I can not speak for the hotel - although we do try to relay all concernes we hear back to the so that we may offer the registrants a top notch convention. As far as the sound at Vets - I'm not making excuses here but please realize that we load in the day of and need to attempt to seamlessly put together a show. Of course there is work that happens in advance with the acts and logistics - however, coming into a union house is tough due to the fact that, fo rthe most part, this is the first time the audio tech hear or even see the talent music. I understand your not having a site ( sort of ) I too am VERY busy with not only magic work but also productions. The saying I also use ( one of them anyway..."If it were easy, EVERYONE would be doing it " I encourage you to make another trip to Columbus for the Fest. I will pass along your concerns to the hotel, as well as take them into consideration for the shows and comps at the hotel. I wish you nothing but the best and hope to see you again soon ! All the best, Steven

Chad - I had forgotten about you running up on stage! I have to say I was confused at first, but my buddy and I actually thought you were just helping the kids get up onto the stage safely. No harm done, it seems.
As for the hotel, my only complaint is with the room key cards. Did anyone else notice that the cards would only allow you to go as high as the floor your room was on? I'm assuming that this is supposed to create some sort of illusion of safety. As if Al Quaida can't take the stairs. When I tried to go to a party on a higher floor, I had to wait in the elevator until someone with a valid card came on. It worked, but was annoying and unnecessary. Also, NEVER EAT AT THE CHINESE BUFFET DOWN THE STREET FROM THE HOTEL. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! |

Magifest was a blast. Some of the highlights for me included John Pika's lecture and being able to meet him and speak with him. I consider him a true artist and an excellent magician.
I really enjoyed John Lovik's material. His magic was so tightly constructed and flawless. But his presentation was so entertaining that I wasn't thinking, "Wow, his magic is tightly constructed and flawless" until I backtracked and had time to really think it through. I am growing in respect for Sterling Deitz. I don't know much about him, but from what I do know, I like him. Christian & Katalina did some excellent construction, routining, and deep mentalism. They were incredibly nice people also. I'm sure I'm missing some details, but that's what stands out to me right now. Peter |

Peter,
Your act was AWESOME! It was a toss up with you and Ando between first and second. I was lucky enough to win stage at Magi Fest in 2004. I am just happy that I did not have to compete again your awesome manipulation act. Christian & Katalina did well too even if they did not get an award. They fool be badly with their mentalism act. Keep up the good work and keep the magic going. Joseph Young

Thanks, Joseph. I saw you at the national SAM convention in (I think it was) 2006. It was my first introduction to any kind of Rubik's Cube magic. I had never even seen Daryl's Enchanted Cube. Honestly, I was fried. I also enjoyed your son's act very much. I thought it was a nice touch at the end when he made a wish (to win) and the genii crossed her arms and nodded her head.
