Night Shades versus Fraud - Can someone give me the best of the two? I have seen videos on both, but what's the real deal on both?
Thanks in advance, Paul T

Both are extremely strong for lay audiences and relatively easy to perform. It's pretty much up to you which is the best match for your style of presentation.

I guess it would be worth noting to some that you have some actual color printing to do with Fraud that you do not have to do with Night Shades, but that is minor and obvious I guess.
I really like both effects, but I have been a die hard fan of Night Shades since Harris released it, pretty much. The novelty is just great, high impact magic, and a good laugh as well. Just a side idea here, but I have performed Night Shades many times, and it makes a great precursor to bill to impossible location. For many years, even though I am a non-smoker, I've performed bill in cigarette, and it always kills. As you know, you are not gonna get an actual autographed bill into a cig, you have to use a cor*** tear method. For many years, I would perform Night Shades and, as you already know, the drawing of the shades ends up on top of George's head. I would have a preloaded bill in my impossible location (wherever you choose) with a duped drawing of the shades on its head. When the bill comes out, there is NO QUESTION in their mind that it is the very same bill. You have magically altered the bill in front of them earlier, then took a corner off and vanished the bill. When it comes out of the impossible location, the first thing you hear from them is, "The shades are there!!!!" As Doug Brewer said in the "Billoon" thread, people usually don't routine their walk around well enough. My idea was to find a way to make it *feel* as though the bill was signed, but in a subtle and practical manner. This has been VERY good to me over the years. I hope it works out for you if you try it. best, Clark

You are very welcome; hopefully, a few of you guys can get something out of the idea. It really does add to any tear method that you can think of. Makes for exceptionally clean magic that is much harder to backtrack.

Thanks, Clark...I will use that too! It's hard to connect effects and routine for walkaround, but you're right in doing so. I'm guilty of not working at that...
What do you think of Ultra Visual Nightshades? The demo looks great...wondering if it's too good to be true - in that it may have restrictions or angle issues. Anyone have it? Comments? Thanks! |

Dduane, you are welcome. I'm sorry that I can't speak intelligently on UV Nightshades. It looks nice, but I have never really had a reason to abandon what is working for me from Paul's work. Sorry to not be of more help there, bro.

Paul Harris Night Shades and Ultra Visual is a really good effect, it is worth the money to buy in my oppinon just to recive one of the gimmicks, which I have found is almost impossible to locate. For those who have it, you know what I mean. As far as the overeall effect, it is great, and a real reaction getter. My personal presentation is where I talk about how as a kid I wanted to be an artist, and that I never got very far, in fact, I would just waste time drawing sunglasses on George (show the dollar bill), then as I am doing "THE MOVES" I say "Good Thing I Stuck To (finish it) magic"
It works well for me, if you like it use it.

Try this out for a set... borrow a bill... have it signed... perform fraud.
Right after fraud while you are still holding the bill tell the spec. that they signed the bill and you guess you should also... take back the marker they used to sign the bill and then say but I wont use a marker... put the marker away and clean up from fraud then perform PH's signature change on the bill I forget the name of this... so your signature is now on the bill where the Sec. of Treasury sig. usually is you can end there... and come back to that group later ask for the bill back and do Night Shades. They will keep this bill forever... some may think this is way to much but if done at the right time it kills... you could also space this out if working walk around just keep coming back to the same group throughout the night and ask for that bill back then do the next effect. Just a thought |

^That's a nice idea...The only thing is that it could get stale. In essence, all three effects involve manipulating ink. While I've always loved these types of effects, I don't know if my specs could handle 3 in a row.

Djc89,
good point I usually do Fraud and the sig effect pretty much one right after the other so it is kinda one effect I guess in the spectators eyes then later if they ask me to come back and do something else I may do a card effect then say hey do you still have that dollar or if they are still looking at it trying to figure it out I hit them with night shades. |

Two cents, both are extremely effective, visual tricks; however the bang for the "setup" buck eventually killed Fraud for me. I can't imagine multiple setups for walk around, but I am not a professional and clearly some will feel differently.

I think fraud is more mysterious but I really want to purchase UV nightshades because it is a instant visual change from what I see in the video.

Just my opinion by I feel that UV is a bit fidgety with all the little gimmicks and all. The original seems a bit more smooth and I've always felt that specs need to see(or think they see) that magic is happening and the original does that a bit more then the UV version. Kinda like a snap change compared to color burn. Also, Fraud may take a bit of work but its worth it and can even stand on its own if it must.
