The Official Spam:
Quote:
The performer clearly writes a prediction on the back of the top playing card. The participant names ANY freely thought-of playing card. The prediction is revealed to be correct. Anybody, anywhere, anytime with 100% accuracy every time! The Daniel Madison Outlaw concept can be applied to any deck of playing cards within minutes and will NEVER fail to amaze even the most sceptical minds

Introduction:
I purchased this a while back, and I am finally making a review. If you like Daniel Madison, I wrote a review on Wrsth: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=159&4

The Basic Effect:
The magician writes down a prediction on a back of a card, not showing anybody. The spectator names any card, then the magician finds it and outjogs it. He asks if that was a free choice, they say yes. He reveals his prediction, it's their card.

Claims:
I quote, "The performer clearly writes a prediction on the back of the top playing card." The spectator can not see the magician write down a prediction. For all they know, you might not be writing something at all.

I quote, "The prediction is revealed to be correct." The prediction is not shown correct until you go through the cards and outjog their card. They can't just name a card, and immediatly show the prediction.

Finally, I quote, "Anybody, anywhere, anytime with 100% accuracy every time!" You can not do this anytime. You need to be carrying around a special deck that you previously made.

The E-Book:
This E-Book is 15 pages long with 6 colored photographs. The E-Book is a grayish color, and would waste a lot of ink to print. I haven't found any grammar or spelling errors, yet.

The Prepared Deck:
I didn't call the deck gimmicked. It's prepared. It's simple to do and took me about 10 minutes. To do the trick, you need the deck. To make the deck, all you need is a deck, and a marker. It's pretty clever, I wouldn't of thought of it.

Originality
I am not so sure that this trick is original. A long while back, my magic teacher showed me this same effect. The differences were minute, but I am sure he didn't own this. I still have the deck. I have no idea what it's called, but it is out there. Beware.

Outlaw Prediction:
This is the effect I described in "The Basic Effect." This is the version I have known and the one I have performed. It looks like real magic. Any card can be named.

Blatant Outlaw:
I really don't like this. The magician states he made a prediction on the back of a card and buried it into the deck. A spectator names a card. The magician admitts he was wrong. He takes out their card, and it happens to be the card he wrote the wrong prediction on. This is just weird. I don't think it would hit hard on an audience.

Outlaw:
A card is not looked at and placed into the performers pocket. The spectator names a card. Their card is still in the deck. The card in the magicians pocket has a prediction on the back. The card the spectator named. I don't like this. It's a little confusing.

Outlaw Trip:
"A spectator is asked to name a card which is written down on a piece of paper. The magician then names a random card and that card is too written down on the paper. A second spectator names a card and the magician spreads through the deck and out jogs it. The card is turned over to reveal the first named card written on the back. The card is placed on the table and the magician makes any magical gesture that he wants and the face of the card is revealed to be the second spectator’s named card." This is very confusing. I won't do it, I am not even sure if I understand it. I quoted this because I took it from another review.

Outlaw vs _____:
I don't want to say what prop you need for this. This is the effect. The performer writes a prediction of which card will be thought of by the participant. The deck is spread face up and the participant is invited to name any card. The prediction is shown to be wrong, however the prediction card is taken out and turned over to reveal the named card written on the back. I don't have the prop and can't e this effect.

_________ Outlaw:
Once again, this uses a gimmick, and I won't say what it is. Two decks are in use the performer states that he placed a prediction card in his deck face-down A card is named by the participant who holds the other deck. The performer reveals the face-down prediction to be incorrect. When the named card is found in the participants pack and the prediction card can be found written on the back of it. This is a cool effect, but I don't have the gimmicked deck on hand.

Outlaw Associate:
The deck is shown as a special deck. Marked on the back of each card is a different random playing card the deck is set up in no order and offered to the participant for shuffling. The participant is asked to name and playing card, the are then asked to name another card of which they would associate with the first card. The named card is turned over to
reveal the 2nd named card written on the back. This is very cool and surprising. I think I will use this.

Double Crossed Outlaw:
An envelope is handed to the participant. They are asked to name any playing card; the marked playing card on the reverse of this card is noted. They are then asked to name another playing card; the cards are scanned through facedown to find their marked card, the face card that this is marked on the back of is also noted. The envelope is opened to reveal the first noted playing card with the 2nd noticed playing card marked on the back of it. I am going to sound wierd, but I don't like magic that uses envelopes.

Teaching:
The teaching of these effects are good. Most explanations are less than a page with no pictures. There is still enough information that you would understand this.

Overall:
I really like this. Probably the only effect I will perform is Outlaw Prediction. It is my favorite.

I give Outlaw a 9/10.

Jeff

P.S. If you have any comments or questions please post them so you can make an informed decision about what you purchase.

After reviewing both, I don't think the differences were enough to warrant a release on Daniel's part. He doesn't credit Jay at all, so maybe it was a case of independent creation. The first effect in the ebook is the strongest, and that is the one that is basically the same as Jay's effect.

I sent Jay a copy of Outlaw, so maybe if he reviews it he can decide whether or not to contact Daniel.

I don't think Outlaw is a copy of Sankey's, more a case of independant creation, as Outlaw has been available for a long time from Madison, before Sankeys Blackpool effect was released to the community (I think, don't hold me to it though).

Does anyone know why Daniel took this effect down? It seems like lately he has been removing a lot of popular items from his store.

People have been questioning the originality of some of his effects. They include: Bound, Wrath, and Outlaw. They are all similar to Sankey effects.

Actually in the PDF Daniel mentions that he was the original creator and that 2 people have since ripped off his idea, one more blatantly than the other (Sankey). The 2 effects in question are Sankey's Blackpool effect and Martin Sanderson's Storm Force 7. I have SF7 and it is not exactly the same as Daniel's so not a rip off. I cannot comment on Sankey as I do not own the DVD, but I definitely feel that Daniel was being a little arrogant with this claim. When I heard about the idea/effect I immediately worked out the method, so its quite possible someone else could come up with the same idea for the effect. Sanderson's version is even a little cleaner which some people may like, and makes it different from Daniel's.

Puts me in 2 minds about Daniel really. He has some creative thinking but this lashing out at other creators seemed a little immature to me (he didn't actually name anyone but he still brought up the point and we all know the effects in question).

Just my thoughts

I think all versions of this are based on a very old idea.My dad back in the 1940's had a pack of cards made up like one of these tricks.

Exactly, not much is original these days, so don't claim its yours!!

I personally like it when a magician holds his hands up and says "hey, this isn't my invention, it's just my take on it"

Cool trick though! Whichever version you get!
