I was wondering if anyone knew a good source of "alum", which can be used to write invisibly on the inside of an egg. What is it and where can I get it?

Don't bother. According to a rather extensive series of articles that ran recently in MAGIC the whole egg writing thing is a myth. Continued and varied experimentation on the part of the author of the articles never resulted in legible writing, and in most cases marks of any kind, appearing on the inside of an egg.

Payne:
I haven't read the MAGIC article, however John Scarne in one of his card books describes a trick by Engligh magician Paul Clive utilizing alum to make writing appear on the inside of a hard boiled egg. "Dissolve one ounce of alum in one pint vinegar. Dip a small brush into this solution and print the name of the card you arre going to force on the egg shell. Let the egg dry until no signs of writing remain. Then boil the egg for about ten to sixteen minutes (preferably sixteen), and let the egg cool off. That's all there is to it." I have never tried this, but alum is available at any parmacy for anyone who might be so inclined. If it worked for Scarne and Clive, I'm not sure why MAGIC had problems. |

According to the MAGIC article none of the various recipies they tried worked. They surmised that it was basically a FOAF (friend of a friend) situation. No one ever did the effect they just told of others who said they had done it or seen it done at one time. If anyone has had any luck getting this trick to work there are some guys over at MAGIC magazine who would love to hear about it.
