Can someone help settle an argument.
There was an episode of Columbo (Peter Falk plays a detective) and/or episode of Quincy (Jack Klugman plays a medical examiner) that features mentalists and remote viewing. In the episode there is a man who demonstrates ESP abilities and is tested by a scientist - who reveals himself to be a 'mentalist' who recognises the guy he is testing as a fellow mentalist. There is a remote viewing test involving someone putting a cross on a map (to find the location) blind. In the episode the actual method is revealed - eg Columbo/Quincy figures out how the remote viewing was done. Now does anyone know if this happened on... (A) An episode of Quincy (B) An episode of Columbo (C) Both - the description confuses two different shows merging them together. I think it is (C) but my friends are claiming it is either (A) or (B). We have all had several bottles of Heinekins and noones memory is coming back. |

It's actually an episode of Miss Marple. Or is it one of the Die Hard films?

I think I remember the magician episode of Columbo.
http://www.columbo-site.freeuk.com/episode.htm has a list of Columbo episodes with plots. I haven't yet found one about mentalists, but haven't checked them all out yet only the ones that have titles that seem relevant.

I recently purchased the Columbo series on dvd, at least to the most current they have available (eight seasons). The remote viewing episode was in season eight, called Columbo Goes to the Guillotine. It is as you describe: mentalist has 3 people blindfolded and select a random spot in a mapbook by making an X. Then they each drive to that location, pick a compass direction, and concentrate/draw the city image they see in that direction.
There is also an earlier episode featuring a magician who murders the owner of a nightclub called Now You See Him, or something like that. Great stuff. |

It was definately Columbo- I remember it well.
One character, bearing a resemblance to Uri Geller, was trying to get the military to hire him for big bucks. He was tested at the (wait for it) Annemann Intitute. (No, really)

Mescalito,
Thanks, that was a good read. It did not mention the "map trick" but I think this was the one. I love Columbo and my favorite was when he kept "producing" warrants for Jack Cassidy. Cassidy looked to me to be the perfect representation of what a "real" magician should look like... devilishly charming or charmingly devilish. Thanks again, Parson

Thank you all. I definitely remember watching a Columbo with a m*ltiple o** magician. And a Quincy with a clairvoyant mother who helps the police find the killer. I remember the Annemann Institute but in my addled brain, I remember it as a Quincy episode but accept it was Columbo.

Just found this...
Extra Information Synopsis Lt. Columbo is called to investigate the death of Max Dyson, a well-known magician and mentalist, beheaded by his own invention -- a trick guillotine. Columbo takes notice of the fact that the guillotine collar was removed and standing neatly some distance away from the guillotine. Bert, a neighbor who loved and admired Max, tells Columbo that Max made a living building magic effects equipment and exposing charlatan magicians. Columbo visits the Anneman Institute for Psychic Research, directed by Paula Hull. The Institute is government funded with an interest in challenging the Soviet Union's studies in telepathically intercepting the thoughts and actions of the enemy. On the day of his death, Max had monitored such a test on the Institute's prodigal, Eliot Blake, and Blake had passed the test brilliantly. Now Columbo knows, he has to do his homework, watching magicians and trying to find the angle of the guillotine trick. Meanwhile, Mr. Harrow, working with the government, offers Eliot Blake immediate employment outside the country, requiring a new identity. With a court order, Columbo is able to prevent Blake and Harrow from boarding the plane and return them to the Institute. Columbo and Tommy, a fledgling magician, re-enact the test by taking Dyson and Blake's roles and successfully prove that it was not mental telepathy but a well-planned trick. Later that day, Eliot Blake meets Columbo in Dyson's magic shop, and Columbo tells him about the State report on Dyson and Blake who were comrades in an Ugandan prison. Dyson had bought his way out, leaving Blake behind. To prove his point to Blake, Columbo puts on the guillotine collar and places his neck under the menacing blade as he continues his demonstration. Apparently, Blake could never forgive his mentor, Dyson, and after their successful Insti-tute test, Eliot Blake found Dyson working on the guillotine and decided to make Dyson's death look like an accident. Eliot sees his way out of his dilemma and releases the blade on Columbo. To his surprise, Columbo is unscathed because he had reversed the collar labels from "danger" to "safe." Eliot is shattered as Columbo places him under arrest. Peace, Parson
