Though I'm retired now, I accepted a small Close Up job in a private home for six people. I started preparing the night before as is my usual practice, checked out my props and gimmicks. I also sat down to clean and polish my "Lassen" (Morgan size) coin sets.

On "show" night, I strapped on my Porpore Coin Rattle, put on my PK R***, armed my Kennedy money Box, loaded my TT with a folded Flash Bill, and put two gaffed decks in my pocket. I felt like a race car driver (only with brand names hidden) all over me.

My last step was to have Carla load the signed team t-shirt (that one of the guests mothers stole for me, from her son’s "secret" hiding place.) That little gem was to hide in my Sq/Circle.

At this point, I am always looking forward to doing an hour close up. Truth be told, if I was to find out (at that point) the check bounced, I would still do the gig.

At the party I had two choices for a working table, (they know I have a vision problem) and I needed a table to roll out my close up pad. Carla's good eyes secretly scanned the group for a cheap Timex watch with a sweep second hand, she finds three, she tells me who has them. I'm not going to bore anyone with how I routine all this stuff, except to cover the joy of C/S/Brass and the way I use the Sq/Circle.

I convince two people that I can get them to think their watches have stopped for several seconds at a time, even though others just saw the watch moving. I have one poor soul think HIS SIGNED $20 bill has gone up in smoke (by mistake) just to reappear in that small wooden box by his elbow. Now comes the main point of my tome, my coin sets.

I have two people sit down at the table and ask them if they have ever seen coins like this, bla bla bla. No one has ever seen the South African coin or the large Chinese coin before but recognize the Silver Dollar, which is just what I want.

I invite them to handle and look at them (since they can), that is just one of the joys of working with coins for me. Two people saunter over to watch me, (they have seen me work before), but I don’t care. (that’s another joy of C/S/Brass.) The two “visitors” whisper to each other, I know what they are doing, each is going to watch a hand, it doesn’t matter. (another joy of C/S/Brass.) I use no flourishes or fancy moves (even though I know several.) I never make anyone feel foolish, I tell them “when I do this, this happens, and I don’t know why bla bla bla, my coin Rattle is working hard for me. I also do HH in the same coin size with a swap out set at the end that Todd Lassen gave me so the spectators can examine the pretty coins, they always want to and I love them to, I am very proud of the coins.

After a QB2 Coin bend and some other stuff I prepare for the Sq/Circle. I have been doing it this way for 35 years. I picked what they think is a random person and ask him a lot about himself. We get onto sports and I force him to mention his signed team t-shirt. I now steer him away from that subject and ask him if he believes in magic bla bla bla. I show the “empty Sq/Circle and I use my Wanna Flash to produce a Large Flash from the Sq/Circle. When the shirt appears I always act surprised and shocked (It is the perfect time for overacting) and I have never been burned. If a subject said “someone had to of gotten that for you” I would consider that being burned and it has yet to happen.

I still love doing magic, how about you?

I have only recently begun practicing C/S/B, and have not performed it yet. but I look forward to doing so! Based on H.H., scotch and soda and coins across, I anticipate great fun and amazement.

Thanks for your story, I hope I have the energy to continue performing as long as I can.
