I am not to sure where to post this so I tried here were I saw other talks about hold outs.
Dose anyone know where I can find a a telescoping hold out for sale? Not a Black Widow, but a real Hold Out Machine. I saw talk on the Café about they could be found on Asian Gambling sites, but I have had no luck finding one. or dose anyone know of a book that tells you how to make one? Any help would be great. Thank you and have a great day, Sean |

James Riser makes one. Look for "holdout" on his main magic page: http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/JamesRiserMagic.html
There used to be a picture, but he must have taken it down. |

Sean,
If you're looking for a Kepplinger holdout, it doesn't really telescope. That would imply concentric tubes of slightly increasing diameter which fit inside each other, eh? If you're looking for the scissoring action type, they are fabulously expensive. Most people who have one wouldn't let it go for any price. Gambling collectors are especially wary anyway. Gravity hold-outs are being used to secretly abscond with playing cards. Is what you want to do involve standing or sitting during the actions. If you want to cheat at cards with one, you need a Kepplinger, though I'd use a bug or my shirt. If you're doing magic and you're standing I'd learn how to palm really well and not sweat the additional learning curve of a freaking hold-out. For information on gambling apparatus, PM Paul Chosse. He is THE EXPERT I know of on this forum. Good luck getting in touch with him though. If you just want one, because you want one to play with, PM me. To see one go to: Link link KG |

Dave,
I would not give a dime to James. As he says on his site he like to pick who gets one and who does not. There are words for people like this, and I don't use them on the Café nor would I give that type of person the time of day. NUFF Said Posted: Feb 12, 2008 5:10pm Kentfgunn I sent you a PM, I always wanted one, but I just think you can do some great magic with one. Now I am not to sure what type of hold out the Trabucco hold out is, but what I was able to get out of post on the Café it does not work with your sleeves. Sean |

Why not a Black Widow? The Black Widow is the real thing! It may not be made of heavy brass but it can steal and deliver an item without moving the hand holding the item. If you change the atachment with a one for cards it will work most like THE KEPPLINGER HOLDOUT and it dose not require as mush force. and for less tha 10% of the cost of a KEPPLINGER.
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

Tom, I had thought about that, but now that I have talked with some great people here on the Café that had a lot more knowledge on hold out then I did. I think I am going to start working with a gravity hold out.
I was pointed at few different types that are out on the market and I am going to have a good time trying them out. The best thing I was told to learn more on hold outs was to the Book "Hold Out Miracles" or you can get the Hold out DVD "Jack Miller Hold Out Miracles" which has the hold out book on the disk in a PDF formant. There was a holdout made in the early 1980's by Johnny Cates of Abilene, Texas. It telescoped but in a different way, more like a piston. You move either arm and the device extends. It doesn't operate by gravity so your arms can be any angle relative to the floor. The tip was designed to hold a coin and would deliver that coin directly to and from a classic palm. Johnny was a jeweler at the time and the prop is very well made with leather straps. You can even wear it under a shirt without it being seen. As far as I know there were 12 of these made. I own #2.
Bill you probably know Johnny - the younger Johnny Cates - and may have seen him demonstrating the device back when. Just tossing that out for completeness. |

Johnny gave me one of these. I don't know where it is right now, but I was telling Sean about it.

Jay Leslie makes a holdout that Martin Nash raved about. I was Jay's sounding board when he was designing it. I listened then made suggestions that Jay would ponder then blow them out of the water with his own thinking. He managed to maximize the travel per number of scissors and speed of travel. His engineering is quite impressive. If like I can pm you Jay's number.

God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

Johnny Cates' holdout did not have any scissors in it. He used a different principle.

I think 'Creations by Star' of Sweden sell a lap elevator that may be of use to the seated magician although I have not seen it in person.

The lap elevator is interesting but is used to clean up items you have dropped in your lap. It would not deliver an item to your hand. Also you must be seated. If it is made by Tim Star I'm sure it is very nice.
Side note to Bill Palmer - when I met Tim Star he was selling those nice cups he used to make. Wish I had purchased some. While I'm standing there Johnny Brown walked up turned three of the cups mouth up, picked up a magic wand and tapped out the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on the mouth of the cups. Then he said "those are some nice cups", turned and left. We tapped after he left and they all played the same note... |

I wish I had a set of those, too. I'm trying to get Tim to make some more.

I had a set of Tim Stars that were owned by a luminary. The John Mendoza cups are a bit better as they will take tennis ball and the realease is more dependable. That's just my opinion. The Tim Stars definitely deserve a place in the case for the consimate cup junky.
