It's was a USDA person who contacted me, and did the surprise inspection, etc. My rabbit actually has as much documentation as a racehorse, or elephant in a circus. The animal had to haver a vet inspection, and shots, certain size travel cage, etc.

I just posted under the Rabbit Police section - thought I'd pass along some info here. The license in question is USDA, Class C Performing Animal. Rabbits fall under the heading. If you are a part time act and not actively advertising, chances are you will fly under the radar. If you are advertising, they may find you, so it is worth getting licensed. Not a huge hassle after the initial inspection. As long as you let the inspector see it is a pet as well as a show animal, you will be fine.
If you have any questions, I'll be happy to give you information based on my personal experience with the USDA and inspections. Tom |

Since a number of people asked, a bit concerned, the process was not a big deal. Expect the Inspector to come to your shows unannounced as well.
I admit I had to restrain my natural smart aleck instinct, my first thought was "since we've solved all the other problems, we're now going after bunnies?" But, again, no big deal, really.

Since I've been licensed, I've only had an inspector at one show. That covers about nine years. The truth is they seem to be stretched pretty thin already. If you keep your animals clean, they have room to move in their carriers and you make certain they get regular check ups, there is no problem.
The real hassles can come from state vets - but unless you are working the entire run of a fair, chances are you will avoid them altogether. Tom |

Marty got nailed because his picture showed up in the paper with his rabbit so the inspector showed up at a library show. Hassled him pretty good. She even threatened to have him arrested for verbally abusing her because he asked a few questions. Anyone who knows Marty knows he wouldn't verbally abuse anyone. The inspector was just plain nuts. |

USDA, Class C Performing Animal license is only $40
I have had one for over a decade now. The inspectors have all been very nice and each inspection has been easy. But wait, there's more! For shows you still need insurance to be totally legal and that can cost thousands. Ya, I know it’s over the top for a bunny but I’m just saying… Hugs and Hissessss, Maria |

Here's the actual federal law, for anyone interested or curious. This first link defines animals regulated under the Animal Welfare Act, specifically including rabbits:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare......_eig.pdf The next link defines & lists procedures for inspection criteria for performances using regulated animals. This page specifically includes variety acts and magic shows. The various manuals for care and welfare of these animals are listed on this page. For example, the rabbit must be transported to and from shows in a USDA approved animal carrier with clear "LIVE ANIMALS" and "THIS SIDE UP" markings. You'll have to track these individual manuals through the links provided for the wherefores and forthwiths: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare......_eig.pdf This link specifically defines Magic Shows using regulated animals as a regulated activity under this law: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare......_eig.pdf God forbid that our government should make a law easy to understand and comply with!! It's also interesting - and Marty pointed this out to the inspector leading to the accusation that he was being verbally abusive - you need a certificate to use a live rabbit in a magic show, but no certification is required to feed that same rabbit to a snake or to use the rabbit as a sacrifice in a ceremony. Personally, I believe the serpent in the Garden of Eden was the first lawyer. Oddly enough, as*es, snakes and rats are not considered regulated animals. They must have a stronger union than rabbits.

Our experience with USDA has been positive. This a a federal law. Anyone in the US with mammals in the show are supposed to comply. Does not apply to birds, ducks, parrots, snakes, etc., YET!
Our inspection person said she hoped it would soon! I would not bother until they contact you. It could take years or never. They can come to your house unannounced or to your shows, once they have you on their list. They found us because we have brochures and advertising all over the place. They also tend to check county fairs, and places where farm animals tend to be. We feel it is a infringment of our privacy we would rather not have, but so be it. They are not very tough, demanding or stringent. There can also be other local laws, and other laws when you travel across state lines. Big cities probably worse than small ones, or country towns.
