Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative lubricate for the Devano Rising Card other than Zinc Sterate? Preferably something that can be purchased locally.
Thanks. David Tower

Greetings David;
Zinc Sterate or fanning powder as it is commonly called is really the best for brushing in your rising unit. When we are making our units we brush the full surface behind the rising channel with a makeup brush dipped in a zinc Sterate and powdered graphite mix. Then we assemble the units, and just before the backs are put on, we lightly dust again on both sides of the weight. Our mix is 1 part powdered white graphite and 3 parts Zinc Sterate. We have found over the years since 1971 that this gives our units the smoothest running. If you would like, send me your address and I'll put some in a small ziplock and send it to you, no charge. Whatever you do, Do-Not Use any type of oil or liquid lubricant. In addition to soaking into the card surface they also attract dust and will eventually gum up and slow down your rising power. Now there's a magic dealer who knows the value of building customer satisfaction, even before a person becomes a customer. It's too bad the Magic Dealer's Association (MDA) doesn't have an award for dealers like Marty! Congratulations, Marty! You have won something much more valuable than a trophy... respect!

Marty,
One problem with the zinc, it seems to me, is that is collects moisture. When I put my fingers into the gimmick, the powder appears to be sticky preventing the unit from sliding smoothly if at all. Another reader here PM'd me and said that he felt it was best that the unit have no lubricant at all. It sounds like you have a lot of experience with this so any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks. David Tower

Greetings David;
I have never had a problem with Zinc Sterate in the past, but I am always working on making any improvements to everything I produce. About 1990 I believe, I was given some white powdered graphite to play with. On its own, it was very slick, but not as easy to spread as the zinc sterate was. Over about a 6 month period, I made up numerous units with varied mixes of the combination of the two and had restaurant workers that I know, put them through the mill. After a month, I would take them back and replace them with others, then pull the old ones apart and see how they were holding up. After a couple of months, I hit upon the mix that I now use, finding that this lubricated the sliding of the weight for years. Since we have a lifetime warranty on our rising units, anytime one would come back for replacement, I would go over it to see where the problem was. To date, none have come back due to sticking. I feel perfectly sure that Zinc Sterate will solve your problem, and as I offered above, I would be more than happy to send you some of my mix for you to put in your unit. If your unit is one we made, you can always send it back to us and we will send you out a new one right away. Another thought that just came to me is that I often see units where people use double sided masking tape for the adhesive on the rising tab. That tape gums over time and sticks to the channel grove cut in the face card and slows down the speed of the rise. Have you checked that to see if that could be the cause instead of the lubricant? (Like I said, just a thought) We use a toupee tape for the adhesive to grip and rise the card on our units and make that available also for as long as you own our decks. We make hundreds of decks a month yet only get back maybe 1 or 2 at most every three months, and they are usually when someone tries to open the unit to see how it works and breaks the line. Either way, we don't care what you do it (and I could tell you some hilarious stories.lol) we replace them anytime you have a problem with them. I do not know who's make you have, as there are over 20 different ones on the market right now, (I personally have 78 different made units in my collection from various people over the years), but I do know what it takes to make ours. There are 23 seperate steps in the manufacture of our rising cards, and every unit is tested 6 times when finished then 6 times before a shipping protector is slipped in to keep the weight from bouncing around in shipment. It is the little things that really make the difference. Anytime I can be of help to you, feel free to just shout. All the best Marty Spellbinder; Thank You for the kind comments, they are most appreciated. That is what the Café is all about-magicians helping magicians. I learned a long time ago from good friends Ken Brooke, Edwin Hooper & Al Cohen that we should always take the time to help everyone in our field. While we will never get rich in this business, we will have a lot of fun, make a lot of new friends, and earn a comfortable living doing what we enjoy best. And isn't that what life is all about? P.S. I love the Magicbob "I Hate Card Tricks Book" and will soon be giving a review of some of the tricks from the second one here. |

Martini,
How about a DVD on making a Devano deck? |
martini Special user delta, pennsylvania 548 Posts |
Greetings Gary,
I have been approached about doing a DVD on how to make them. Unfortunately, to assemble all the items that we use, and to make all the various jigs, would be too costly for magicians to do their own. It just would not be a beneficial DVD to put out on this one particular trick. All the Best Marty |

I cant believe that you sell them for only $20.00 bucks and give that kind of warrenty, on the other hand I have had your rising cards for 3 years or so and they still work like day one. NUMS P.S. Thanks for the advance copy of "money making card magic" by Rudy Hunter. The rest of you will have to wait until June for yours. But it is well worth the wait. |

Marty,
Thanks for giving away the farm. It is not everyday you encounter a dealer with so much integrity. I will check out your website later on this week. I can't tell you how impressed I am by your drive to build, test and rebuild in order to create the best product that you can. Thank you again.

What is on this new Rudy Hunter dvd?
When will it be available? Inquiring minds want to know. S. |

Greetings Steve;
Sorry for taking so long to get back to your question. I have been so busy lately that I try to drop in from time to time, but I often miss things. Rudy's new DVD is called Money Making Card Magic and was scheduled for release in June just prior to his lecture tour. I got an advance case of them as we will be having Rudy down for our Funarma convention in July in Aberdeen, Maryland. I do believe that the DVD has now been advertsied by some dealers as some have been getting early releases of it. Anyway it contains the card sleights and routines that have earned Rudy a living for some time, hence the title. As to what is on it: An All Backs routine, Crimp Card work, a Sneaky Peek, a Rythym False Cut, a Double Lift and a Hofzinser Spread, a One Handed Top Palm, a Secret Change, Subliminal Parapyschology, a Flip Switch, a Color Change, a Signed Card to Wallet, an Ambitious Card, a Card to Pocket and a Birdcage Credit card Vanish. I just got the chance myself to watch it the other day, and it is very well done and everything very well taught. Hope that helps answer the inquiring minds.lol By the way if you make it to the convention this year, you'll see all of this demonstrated and taught as well as more that is in that lecture.
