Jim was the best Jim Rose we had (and there are many contenders for the title). He reinvented the sideshow, has influenced a generation of performers and opened the door for greater mainstream acceptance of more hardcore versions of classic sideshow performance. Let's face it, without the impact of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, I doubt anyone would have been interested in what many are doing today, including lifting weights from body piercings.
The hitting a dwarf on the head with a frying pan was just pathetic compared to what Jim presented in the past. |

It sounds like a repetitive motion injury, a sad situation. I'm not sure if for whom the pan was worse. At least, he could've rolled it up, after the infamous blows. "Ask not for whom the pan rolls, it rolls for thee!"
Jim's had a good ride, and he's not done yet. His ability to present our artform as something new, has been great for all of us. And he's a great talker, one of the best. But he hasn't been alone in keeping it alive. I recall a TV show where several of us were interviewed, and he was talking about opening on Broadway. There's only one of us, who's gotten even close, and that's Todd. It was a Fox TV show, probably the only unbiased thing they've done in years. For those in the area, New York's "Monday Night Magic" features some of us regularly, thanks again to Todd's influence. It's not on Broadway, but it's also not too far a walk, and a delightful place to spend an evening. I'll be there on 2/25, and I've heard rumors of quite a few of us descending on the theatre. I'm looking forward to seeing you all!

You may be right Todd, I just hold a certain amount of irk towards Jim rose and his "influence" in the media concerning sideshow. Some of you may remember my rant about this at Slim's DG. Jim Rose did indeed expose and reintroduce the world to sideshow, BUT he displayed it as a joke, a shock value only type of show... not much entertaining, just a bunch of guys doing crazy things and using profanity as a tagline (yes I know I did it, but abstained only mere months into my act). This type of shockshow formula has unwittingly caused multitudes of copycat sideshow groups doing the same.... exact.... thing.... so that is why I say, Jim Rose? who gives a sh!t?

If it wasn't for Rose, there wouldn't be Jan Gregor's 'Circus Of The Scars', imho the best sideshow book ever written...(and the best book I ever read.)
I can't watch much of that kind of self torture stuff but I sure can read about it when written like Jan can write. (With Tim's collaberation.)

A FANNY PACK!?
OH GOD WHY?????????!!!! Really? he's wearing a fanny pack? Does it hurt more to be smacked with a frying pan or to hit bottom? OH, and nice anti-drug shirt Jim.

As a fan, I was never into the Jim Rose style, but he really did help bring sideshow acts into youth pop culture. Even in Brasil, the only American sideshow most people know is his "shock value" kind. There are many small troupes around inspired by him, but they bore me to death. There's no pitch, no talking, no magic.
Don't get me wrong, I love to be shocked, but I gotta be amazed too I blame James Taylor for my sideshow brainwashing. |
