No, I don't believe in real magic, but that doesn't matter as I am a born actor.

But discussing one's beliefs is a good way to examine them and find problems with them. I think it's very healthy, personally, to re-examine what one assumes is foundational fact.
Personally I've found this discussion interesting due to the many perspectives. As long as it stays respectful I see no reason not to continue.

I love this thread. I came looking to ask something similar. I don't know much about Bizarre as a facet of magic in general but I have had numerous unexplainable experiences during my life and it has given me the desire to create a show around these experiences and augment them with magic to hopefully instill in the audience a bit of the feeling of wonder, awe, and incredulity I experienced when they happened to me.

For me the word "believe" does not belong to "real magic".
If you do study the Occult, you will find a lot of things to "believe" which are almost always the explanation to something and not the thing itself. You only need to belive in the explanation of something and this goes strongly in the direction of Religion. But if you research the topic "magic" more seriously you will find less and less explanations and more and more experiments to do yourself. So all in all, "magic" is nothing to believe in. |

Well, I'm a little more inclined to believe in necromancy, now.
Kidding aside, of course... We live in a big, tasty universe. It has this habit of surprising us. Constantly. Whether we like it, or not. That said, I'm willing to keep an open mind and believe in that which is seemingly impossible. After all, if there's one thing I do know, it's that I don't know jack squat. Cheers, Sacred Chao |

I found it helpfull to have a carefully redacted list of powers I believe in. From time to time I modify bits to describe my belief in a more accurate way but it is fairly static.
Whenever I explain something, I stay whithin that list : it helps a lot in designing presentation and in my interactions when I am in character but not performing. So yes, not only I believe but I control the thing carefully |

A person who passes off stage magic as "real magic" is not a bizarre magician - he's a charlatan.

I disagree Sir. It depends to what degree and under which conditions. You are making a blanket statement that doesn't cover every situation.
You could say, if you are trying to make people believe you are a wizard capable of making miracles happen then yes. Or if you are taking peoples money having them believe you can predict the future, sure. But if you want to be a man of mystery and have people believe you live a magical, positive and/or alternative lifestyle when you are walking around in public then no, that is not being a charlatan. That's just being interesting and reminding people there is real magic all around you and to be more open minded. This is a good thing something our society has mostly dismissed and that Michael is keeping alive for all of us who wish we could have that impact for real.. You don't have to believe in real magic only the possibility that it may exist.

I appreciate your opinions, however, I still disagree. The greatest thing about magic is not that it convinces people that magic is real. The greatest thing about magic is that it reminds us how easy it is to blur the lines between reality and illusion. Magic is the ultimate lesson in critical thinking. I think that any time a person willingly attempts to get other people to suspend their critical thinking, it is a terrible thing for society. Open mindedness does not mean believing in anything without good reason, open mindedness means believing in anything that has a compelling reason to be believed. Consequently, the purpose of magic is little to do with the highlighting the impossibility of the effect and more to do with exposing the frailty of the mind. Supernatural magic has no compelling evidence for its existence.
You may be wondering how a person who thinks as I do manages to perform bizarre magic given my position, but I assure you, a creative, well-practiced performance does not need the perception of reality as a crutch.

And I respect yours all good we are just theorizing and politely debating for fun thanks for joining.
When does someone become a charlatan exactly? By simply walking around looking and acting like a wizard or believing they are (unknown to others as that is internal thinking)? No one is saying anyone trying to convince people magic is real that is always up to you to accept or disbelieve. Magic can be simply allowing yourself to remember and experience the wonderment of a child and keeping fantasy and creative possibilities alive by observing others who look and act magical. There is a line in the sand and I don't think your original comment specifies what that is exactly. Why not encourage dreaming of an alternative reality without personal gain by displaying or observing those qualities in public? Is that wrong to present possibilities and get people to assess and/or challenge their critical thinking? We do not want to encourage others to totally suspend their critical thinking, only to accept possibilities that they don't know everything. Science is yet to prove it all so there could still be magic we are unaware of. To dismiss that notion is like saying the world is flat and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool and should be burned at the stake (or something like that). You say "Supernatural magic has no compelling evidence for its existence", so that means it doesn't exist? Are you 1000% sure? Based on what? Do you know the secrets of the universe? I don't but I do know the world is not flat. A creative, well-practiced performance is only one vehicle to get from A to B. We can embody the spirit of magic and share with those who have the common sense to know the difference or not care, even if that is just for a minute. Magic may be fleeting as a good movie is escapism of the real world stresses and boredom. When viewed in this way you most definitely can pass magic off for being real without fear of being a con man. Be a child again it doesn't have to be logical or proven or be used as a charlatan. Did you not believe in the tooth fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Clause? Were your parent evil charlatans because they tried to instill magical characters in your early impressionable life? How is that any different? Some would argue that could have manipulated your views as an adult from childhood, by learning that it's ok to lie if it's for the good. So why can't an adult be viewed as being magical to other adults? Surely you are not as impressionable or gullible as you where as a child? I think it's ok to spread the belief that magic is real, it gives some people hope like religion and the invisible man.
