When the inspector comes and says, "Hey...I want to talk to you about your live rabbit." Just say, "You thought it was real?" and take out a Spring Rabbit. Then say, "Wow...I never thought that would fool an adult!" Then laugh and point at him.

In 1999, I started doing a show using a pig at fairs & festivals. Some friends advised me to get a USDA license - which I had never heard about, so I did. 2 animals - $30 with $10 application fee. (Price hasn't gone up.) First time the inspector came out, she spent about 3 hours finding out what I did, how I used the animals, saw food & storage containers, pens, pet carriers, sanitation, vet paperwork, etc.
I was asked at the time if I knew any magicians using rabbits. I replied a couple and was told "say no!". They did not want to be bothered with magic acts. If this has changed and they are now targeting acts - you can bet it is because they had complaints about the way a rabbit was used or handled. Getting a license isn't a big deal, maintaining the paperwork is no problem - just keep all vet records. (When I move the pig state to state it has to have a health certificate anyway.) I've been inspected once on the road and usually once a year at home - repeat inspections usually last about 20 minutes, most of which is the inspector printing out the compliance form. Most inspectors would not stop your show, but approach you before or after. Unfortunately it isn't a joke. Now - the kicker - Baltimore County Public Schools in MD. just started requiring a current health certificate on any animal coming into a school. This is overtop state and USDA requirements. Will it be enforced? Good question - it is with my upcoming programs. Just another reason I'm planning on retiring my animals. If you have any questions regarding the USDA requirements, I'll be happy to tell you what I know from my experience. Tom PS - If you are a part-timer working word of mouth, you'll probably fly under the radar unless someone turns you in. If you are advertising, you are considered a professional and should get licensed. |

We have a guy near me who does something like that. he has a lizard and reptile show and he is simply fantastic. Not just as a person knowing this stuff but as an educator and entertainer. I work with him a lot and he has to carry a ton in liability insurance and showed me the certificates and insurance and passes he now has to carry just to be able to do what he does.

Rabbits and police. Do they make handcuffs small enough to put on a rabbit?

I have a set of thumb cuffs. That might do the trick.

Be careful, Ken! Rabbits usually know how to escape from them. Make sure you put them on properly. If you know what I mean!

Based on the first post the outcomes of these laws are
*Performing animals will have an annual inspection to ensure their health. *Animals will be in safe cages pointing the correct direction *Children will wash hands after patting bunny. (I always encourage this anyway) *Animals will spend at least half of their day not in performing environment. e.g. in a travelling cage with water instead of in a dove pan. I can not see how this could ever be a bad thing! |

For every crime there is worse crime. Shall police stop giving out speeding tickets until all the drunk driving is stopped? Should they not catch bank robbers till the murders are all caught? This may be a wake up call, in some areas, there are not enough police to give out tickets, or bother with drunk drivers becasue there are more murders that require their attention. (I didn't say attempted muders which are many times the number of murders.) When you lived and worked in a city that has an average of 320 police calls a day and only 5 police officers, and each incident averages 20 minutes to investigate, a whole lot of calls go unanswers, until sometimes several days. A robbery in progress usually occures whe there are severaal attempted murders calls, hence priority requires stopping the murder before the robbery. This is the Amercian way within the cities. Where on this list does the Rabbit Police belong? Somewhere between the murder, robbery in progress, drug dealing, rapeing, or domestic violence? Many rural areas do not experience this, many police officer wifes, don't even believe this goes on, hence high rate of divorce, within the police service. Where on the priority list in the many, many understaffed police departments does the rabbit police fit. Also we can't place self destruction/ manslaughter (Speeding and accidents by drunk drivers) in the same category as a magician who doesn't have a rabbit license. There are ten times (maybe more)people who own vicious dogs, that don't have a dog license, then there are owners with pet rabbits that need a license. In the wacky world we live in, the following is normal practive with every rabbit owner I know: * Performers treat their rabbit right, and use the vet when necessary. * Animals are in safe cages with the obvious opening (door) * Children wash hands or use hand fel after petting the bunny or at least encourage to do this anyway. * Rabbits spend less than 5 minutes in a confined enviornment (Which may do love)and most of their day not performing but in their cage with plenty of water. Personally, the magicians, treat their bunnies better than most other pets. The rule appears to have been made up for the bigger animals (Tigers, Elephants, Bears, Circus Animals, etc.) and some how Rabbits got thrown into this lot!

Wouldn’t you agree that 80% of rabbits are given to kids as a gift. The kids love them for about 6 months. Then, after the novelty wears off, the rabbit spends the rest of his life outside in a cage with very minimal contact from anyone. Compare that to being loved and petted by hundreds of adoring children every week. New and stimulating situations are introduced to magician’s rabbits all the time. Once again, it is the very few who mistreat animals that make it more difficult for all of us.
