Hello all,
Well I have worked corporate, and association events, and birthday parties in the past, mostly by area word of mouth and strolling in public venues handing out buisness cards. Im very interested in breaking into restaratunt magic, and am very comfortable speaking and appearing professional. However I was wondering several things. 1. What types of restaraunts even consider paying a magicican? And what are some of the chains that really are open to hiring impressive entertainers. 2. Who in the restaurnt do you approach? 3. How do you structure the conversation? I want to appear professional, and courteous. Not "death of a salesmen." 4. Tips????? 5. Can the same concepts be applied to bars? Thank you for any help you can offer, it is greatly appreciated. Jimmy |

COME OOOOON!!! Are you serious??!!!!!!!!
Not only is this very same topic covered in this very same section..... http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=5&45 ......but if you use the "search" feature, you'll find more than enough information. |

Yea this topic has been covered many many times in the past week alone.
If you look above you will find a search function and if you simply put in the words, Restaurants and approach you may find 1 or 2 listings. I see you are new so maybe you have not had the ability to use this function as of yet. But the reason it exists is many of us get weary of answering the SAME questions over and over and over. Going over the same arguements over and over and over. Searching will solve a lot of problems for you and for everyone. It is always nice to have real time feedback to a question, but a question as general as this usually can be found in "search" and then spacifics answered here. (HOLY CRAP was that nice or what?!)

At least he is asking from the basis of needing help. How often do we see "Uh, I got a gig working at a restaurant starting tomorrow, what should I do and dress like and I only know two tricks from Ellusionist, Balducci Lev and the ghost deck".
I would suggest getting hold of The Magic Menu books, if you like DVD Live From The Jailhouse is pretty good. Good luck. |

Ahh but all of those topics are how to approach PATRONS! The patrons are not my problem!
My request was for information on how to approach Managment for getting the gig in the first place, not working the gig I apologize for not making myself clear in question number 2. All of my questiosn were related to approaching managment. My apologies, Jimmy |

1. What types of restaraunts even consider paying a magicican? And what are some of the chains that really are open to hiring impressive entertainers.
1A: ones that cater to kids or families, ones with sit down service where orders may take more than a few minutes to prepare. Stay away from buffets. 2. Who in the restaurnt do you approach? 2A: well, here is a clue.... waitresses don't hire magicians, busboys don't hire them, the bar back isn't much help and neither is the cook, I guess that leaves....the general manager! That wasn't even a good question and you lose points for it. One thing, don't try to talk to them during peak periods. 3. How do you structure the conversation? I want to appear professional, and courteous. Not "death of a salesmen." 3A: I suggest something like "Hi, I'd like to discuss an unique form of guest relations with you" then try this when he/she agrees "I do tableside magic, this is something that has been done for years at many restaurants to great success..." 4. Tips????? 4A: usually what is found on top of a mountain if of the alpine form and, for example, the end of an object like a cane or fishing pole. Here is a tip for you (ha!) this is a touchy subject with different opinions. The real knowledgable people do not work solely for tips nor do they openly solicit them in any fashion but if offered they are gratefully accepted, pocketed without counting it. If not offered that is no biggie because you are not there to tap the patron because they get tapped by everyone it seems these days. 5. Can the same concepts be applied to bars? 5A: if working tables if wanting to work behind the bar become a bartender. |

People shouldn't be afraid to ask the forum something. If you are going to give advise then you need to be a little more understanding of where people are coming from. Some people have never used a computer let alone been on a forum or know how to search a forum. But they do want answers. Just guide them to the appropriate action or answer their questions to the best of your abilities. There is absolutely know reason to put people down for asking what you believe to be a stupid question. You are a member here just like everyone else. You can't dictate what you think people should know or not know. Just answer their question to the best of your ability. If you think the question is ridiculous and has been asked way too many times has it crossed your mind to simply ignore it. That goes for you too Danny. If you don't like the question or topic simply move on to a topic you do like. If nobody replies the topic simply fades away into the forum netherworld. So you have a choice either rant and complain about things you don't like or choose the topics you do like and can add knowledgeable advice to. , Jonathan |

Since Jonathan has been appointed moderator lets all congradulate him.
Jonathan, I simply directed him to the search function, and told him that when he had more spacific questions, to then ask them. It would be a far more productive way to go about it. How is this rude in any way? My god you can direct people to applaude for you, you can tell them you take tips, and you are telling me my responce here was rude? You are really losing it buddy. I responded by telling him where he could find a wealth of information on the topic, helped him know people get frustrated by the questions and why that is all in what was a NICE TONE. YOU then go and drag the thread down by acting like the North end of a South bound horse, and blame ME for it! Lets take a vote on who acted like the biggest rat's hind parts here. My vote is you. Your credability just skyrockets downwards if you ask me. Funny you chastise Santa for his post, and the guy he talked too found it informative and amusing. Hmmm it seems as someone has a problem and the 3 of us, Santa, me and the asker are not the ones.

Santa, for the record, I saw your post as nothing BUT humor. I did not view it as mean or vindictive. People need to lighten up.

All right, I'll answer his question. You find a restaurant with a Magician already working there. Start doing magic at his tables and even try to use him as an assistant. Most will be more than happy to. If you are better, Management will approach you and offer you a job. This is the easiest way, let other magicians do the leg work.

Never said you were rude in this thread but you have been on many occasions so it does fit. My point was that you and Santa get riled up over nothing. Your rudeness in the quote above proves this. I said nothing about you other then you could ignore posts if you didn't like them. But you just went off on me just because I think you just like to puff and snort and beat your chest for whatever reason. , Jonathan |
