I want to work on the Three Ball Transposition effect from the Dai Vernon Book of Magic, however, I am having trouble finding balls of the right size for this.
I have my crocheted balls that I used for cups and balls, but I would like something smoother for this, probably solid rubber balls? I just haven't been able to find any that are small enough for this purpose. Any suggestions among you magi out there?

Go to Wal-Mart. In the toy section, you will find packages of hi bounce balls with one large ball and several small balls. They are tremendously expensive -- almost a dollar a package.
Buy enough of them that you will have a set of the small balls you like. The balls are about 1 inch in diameter, which is the size Johnny Thompson uses.

I have a couple of sets of german multiplying billard balls that are somewhere between 3/4"-1". They are basically wooden balls that could be purchased at any home craft store and painted with an acrylic.
I like them because they talk! I actually love the talking for this effect!!! Well...not when I don't want them to talk...only when I do. I hope that makes some sense. |

Thanks, Bill....always a pleasure to take advice from you. I have browsed my local WalMart a few times and will continue to so do, and of course make sure I have sufficient funding lined up should I find what you describe.
Chad, thanks for the idea...will look into it as well. What you said made perfect sense to me....not that that should reassure you or anything.

BTW, I believe these are the same balls you get with one of the rather common sets of the three ball transposition. If there is a party supply store nearby, you can often purchase these singly in appropriate holiday colors.
BTW, if you don't have it, get Johnny Thompson's video on this trick.

Good stuff Bluzz. I'm actually going to look for pretty glass marbles. I think that if they were brightly colored enough, then they'd make a great set of balls for this.
The trick will be to find enough that are near identical in appearance so the illusion is maintained. Perhaps those metal "meditative calming balls" would work too?!?! I'm refering to the ones that make cool chiming noises. They would have a GREAT sound...however it would be important to make certain that the routine did not get spoiled by that sound coming from the wrong place at the wrong time!!! I've seen some that are made small enough for necklaces...so I'm sure a correct size could be found... ...I'm going to investigate this more. I like this lil' idear a lot! |
