There so many great tricks to choose from in this categorie. How about "One More Chance" in Paul Green's, "Nothing up my (Green) Sleeve's" lecture notes. Very strong and mysterious.

Here's an idea. I've been toying around lately with very old, easy procedures (self-working forces, key cards... stuff like that) to go along with the most interesting, magical-looking revelation I can find. Once I have something (which isn't difficult given the amount of choices there are) then I try to come up with the most interesting presentation I can think of given the procedure. Then I try it on a real person to see the reaction. It's pretty much "getting back to fundamentals" magic and it's been a fun experiment. Give it a go and see what happens.

Hi all,
Here are some routines I posted in another thread that might be of interest. They are entire routines that don't involve set-ups. Whether they are the BEST self-workers without set-ups is a different story... I guess that's up to you. Routine 1 1. "Heavyweight"- New Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 7. 2. "Cardini's Color Discernment"- Scarne on Card Tricks, p. 163 3. "Transposed Thoughts"- New Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 98 Routine 2 1. Precognition: "Open Prediction"- More Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 9 2. Telepathy: "The Card Revealed"- Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 46 3. Clairvoyance: "Sleight of Mind"- Self-Working Mental Magic, p. 90 4. Pyschokinesis: "The Piano Card Trick"- New Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 58 Routine 3 1. Precognition: "Paradox"- New Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 29 2. Telepathy/Clairvoyance: "Gemini Twins" 3. Pyschokinesis: "Topsy Turvy"- Self-Working Card Tricks, p. 109 None of these tricks require set-ups and none have any procedures that would be overly difficult to justify through presentation, in my opinion. For some alternatives and the thinking behind these routines, see the Self-Working Challenge thread. |

That's a very interesting thread, and thanks to 'The Fritz' for this excellent ideas. As a 'beginner' I'm stuck for now with OOTW & Devastation, both excellent, but as you all say : never do a trick twice to somebody, so this fresh blood is for me an excellent alternativ and follow up...
Scarne on card tricks and Close up magic are the best to begin indeed, and the Fulves ones too, cheap and so good for beginner, but not only !

As someone already mentioned, The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings has some great self working effects that are impromptu.
Someone mentioned "Impossible" already, but I'd also like to suggest "Prefiguration." Mr. Maxwell writes that it is one of the most startling effects one can do with a borrowed, shuffled deck of cards. He is completely correct. It's also dead simple. |

Cardini's Color Discernment"- Scarne on Card Tricks
I have a problem with the third phase of this trick. Too much things to remember for my brain. Have anyone worked on a alternative? |

Dai Vernon's 'Out of Sight,Out of Mind' gets my vote as my favourite as it is so pure a mind reading feat. If you can obtain a break in a deck, D/L and can control an overhand or haymow shuffle then you can do justice to this gem.
'Emotional Reaction', 'Twisting the aces' and 'Thought transposed' are also other golden offerings from Dai Vernon. Martin Gardiner offers you 'Two pile location' and also 'the Magic of Manhattan'. Jean Hugard offers you 'Thought Anticipated'.Stewart James offers to you 'Miraskil'.There is also the 'Biddle Trick','Gemini twins'and 'Do as I do' to consider. |

You might want to check my stuff; including CARBON FOOTPRINTS and EXPLORATIONS. Two books of mostly impromptu card stuff. In fact, all my books contain a lot of impromptu card stuff...

Bob Strickland's "Duo-Tech II" is a great, self-working, non-sleight card effect. It's more of a mentalism/prediction effect, but it really stuns spectators. Your spectators will have bruised chins after watching you perform this effect because their jaws will hit the floor! I just had to buy a new version of this effect because my old one finally wore out. I was glad to see that it is still being produced and sold.

Daryl's "Untouched"
Any impromptu "Out of this world" "Impossibility" (from Card College V4) Also, I don't do this one as I prefer the sleight of hand variations, but a slop shuffle triumph is actually a pretty good trick. |

If I were to pick 3 self workers .
Gemini Twins - the principle of this trick has a multitude of uses. Rather than matching the marker cards, you could have 2 spectators take out the card next to each marker. The cards they remove will form a random card . Spectator A turns over his card - 6H (use the value of his card) = 6 Spectator B turns over his card - JC (use suit) = Clubs . THe random card they create is 6 of Clubs . THey search through the deck, this card is missing . Performer takes out his wallet and removes one card the 6 of CLubs . Open Prediction - Brr by Tom Baxter or Guided by John Barratt or my own handling of the effect. An effect I wrote up and gave to P Duffie for his ebook Mind Blaster 'Clairvoyant Card' which has received some good feed back on this forum. Unless you are into the mentalism you may have missed this. "From my first complete read-through, this is really very good. The initial standout item for me is the'Clairvoyant Card'. Punchy, clear, very elegant." "His routining is just genius. He has turned the cut deeper force into a thing of beauty." IMHO - self workers are great if they are scrpited well otherwise they are just puzzles. |

Another vote for Geoff William's 'Devastation', although it is best done with a table.

Check out books from the library. personally I LOVE doing tricks with the key card principal. I know its the oldest trick in the book but people STILL fall for it if you do a good presentation.

Scarne's book is right on. Certainly one of my favs is "Do as I do". I set it up as a "...science experiment, and not trick at all". It really hooks them in and I have had calls the next day from friends telling me they just can't seem to get the science to work.
Another great one is "Scarnes Miracle Card Finder". |
