Sometimes we magicians forget the power of the classics. We go searching for something more sophisticated, technical, radically new, or fun for us to do as the magician. This is not always the way to better magic. We could be refining and improving on classic magic we already do or have discarded, with better construction of routines, cleaner sleights, simple props, surprising twists and a fun & entertaining plot!

Chris Priest has released his pet sponge ball (yes you heard that right) routine he has been using to thoroughly entertain AND amaze people for 20 years now. Now before you go thinking what the hell is someone releasing a sponge ball routine for, I do have to say this is a very well refined piece for a worker and does offer good value in it’s construction and also adds a fresh twist. Personally I don’t do the kind of roving work this would be best suited to any more however if I did, this routine would definitely be one to pursue.

Ok, it won’t slay magicians but how many of us have forgotten the immensely powerful reaction that comes from the helper opening their hand to discover two balls where previously there was only one. Sponge balls is THE classic “in their hands” effect and this routine constructs a very neat and well thought out sequence around this powerful moment and also extends the routine a couple of phases past this and even adds an excellent kicker at then end just when they think the action is over. This kicker (using something almost every magician already has) provides excellent “shock” value and adds logically to the power of the routine. It is really what sets Chris’ routine apart from your regular sponge balls. I daresay this would be a very memorable and talked about routine due to the kicker.

The production of this DVD is most professional in all respects and showcases a true “worker” performing in his natural environment as well as detailed teaching segments. The sleights are all well taught in detail (although sponge workers would be familiar with them in any case). The handlings taught for the kicker phase are particularly valuable and an excellent, well covered watch steal is also tipped as a bonus!

For a sponge ball worker or close up performer looking to add a sponge ball routine, this is a must have DVD and is sure to add something of value to any existing routine. The routine is great for all ages and if you understand the power of “in the hands” magic, then definitely check it out!

Cheers,
Al

Only just got back from Blackpool and haven't had a chance to watch this DVD yet, but I did see Chris performing this a number of times this week and although I'm very happy with my own sponge ball routine, there is no doubt that having seen Chris I will now incorporate some of his ideas into my own. If you use sponge balls you will not be disappointed with this DVD if you don't, then this may well make you re-consider.

I first saw Chis perform this during a UK lecture tour and he fooled all of the experienced Sponge ball Workers with it, That is when I asked him to release it.

He took some convincing but the magic world will be glad he decided to put this awesome routine into the public domain.

Enjoy

This is very good. Don't overlook it. The ending gets an amazing reaction and will be something I think many will start doing.

This was my favorite of the Chris Priest DVDs just released.

Recommended.

I recently "got back" into sponge ball magic because as others have pointed out, their effect on an audience especially a young one is almost too good (once the ball pops out of their hand it is hard to do something better in their minds). I am watching WGM, Steve Dacri and Ben Salinas (I know) and it is hard to find something really new under the sun. I was hopping to find something "revolutionary" in Protons although that may have been expecting too much (they are sponge balls afte rall). To me it was strongest (and I was badly fooled) for its use of a gimmick that I believe is still not over-used. Using this technique sparingly, especially to start the routine as Chris does would brng something special to most routines. I admit I am still working my way through this DVD and may find more strong material.

I saw Chris perform for the first time at the recent Blackpool convention. I'd never heard of him before, and soon as I saw him I knew why - this guy is a real worker and spends most of his time performing for laypeople.

We're very lucky he's decided to share his bread and butter routines. There is lots to be learned here with these three DVD's. I recommend all three!

Chris is hardly unknown, having performed and lectured at some of the U.K.'s largest conventions in the past.

Protons is the best Sponge Ball routine ever.

I was first shown this in a restaurant by Chris and I was fooled again and again and again, I just did not know where that **** ball was.

The routine is so commercial, if you work for real people you owe it to yourself to buy this DVD and learn this routine.

Protons is highly reccomended

Sounds very good. May I ask what the basis of your recommendation is?
Do not get me wrong, I do not want to challenge your opinion, just want to understand where you are coming from.

Is it best ever in terms of ease of handling?
Or best ever in terms of kicker ending?
Or best ever in terms of in the hands of the spectator?
Or are you excited because of the use of the certain gimmick?

Thanks

best

I'm confused.

Someone can answer the following questions:

1.- It's a DVD with new types of sponge balls moves?
2.- It a new gimmick used with sponge balls?
3.- It's a new routine using already known sponge balls moves?

Does the dvd come with sponge balls or the gimmick that is used?

The DVD comes with nothing extra. The assumption is you already have the stuff or know how and where to get it. And watch the DVD before you go out and buy the stuff. He has some thoughts that may influence you.

I agree with what's been written above. It's a very solid routine, worth your study. If you already have an excellent routine and are competent with sponge balls, you won't find earth shattering moves here, but some clever thoughts you may want to implement into your own routine.

I would say this is a spongeball "act" because it's more than just a routine. Chris put so much thought into its construction. I don't want to say what he uses as it will make it more fun to watch if you don't know.

I own ALOT of DVD's...way more than I really need. Actually, way more than anyone really needs, in fact. Many times I will buy a DVD knowing I won't use the material, but I just like watching how other workers work. Lately, while still being able to learn something (good or bad) from recent DVD's, I've been mostly disappointed in the material offered. That said, Protons is a really wonderful DVD. As Christopher points out, this is more than just a routine. And while many segments are not "earthshakering" new stuff, the use of gimmicks (which most of us already own) and the structure of the routine are really fantastic. Mr. Priest gives very thorough instruction and the performance part is done very well.
I highly recommend this DVD. Maybe, because I was looking for a DVD with some ideas for improving my sponge routine, but it really is one of the best DVD's I've bought in a long time. I've been very pleased with many of the segments I"ve incorporated into my sponge routine. Buy it....'nuff said.

Okay, I took the dip and got it.

It was an okay buy and I guessed the gimmick correctly - that gave me some satisfaction.

Will I use it?
No - as I do not like to depend on the gimmick. So unless you are willing to work with a gimmick, you do not need this DVD.

Same here. It it uses balls made from sponge. I thought they were wooden. And they don't actually vanish, but are concealed in the hand. Live and learn.
