Geller is on a roll.

He just got a dismissal of the EFF YouTube filing against him in California, and Geller may win the case he has against the same people in Philia, PA. Now this...

02-27-2008

ProSieben Orders 2nd Season of Uri Geller Format

MUNICH, February 27: The season finale of The Successor—The Next Uri Geller last night outperformed the average rating for its competitive time slot by 80 percent.

2nd season has been ordered for next year.

Up against CSI: Miami and House, the episode scored an 18.1-percent share in the 14-to-49 demographic. In 14 to 29, meanwhile, it scored a 29.8-percent share. With up to 4.8 million viewers watching the first season, The Next Uri Geller was the highest-rated show premiere for ProSieben over the last year and a half.

The show, marketed worldwide by SevenOne International, is also faring well on the Dutch channel SBS 6, where the local version is scoring an average 22.8-percent share.

NBC aired a version last year and the NBC show has also been picked up by CTV in Canada and Nine Network in Australia. That means Jim Callahan, Gerry McCambridge, Angela, Karol, Ehud, et all, will be seen throught many parts of the world.

It will launch on the Hungarian channel TV2 later this spring.

“This show is a real attention-grabber because Uri Geller succeeds in intriguing people,” says Jens Richter, the managing director of SevenOne International. “With the latest successes in Germany and The Netherlands, we are eager to see Uri capture further international audiences as well.”

The German show is better, with more time for each performer, about double. Also no distructive force on the show, but with just Uri making comments. The USA show had one of the moderators who was trying to kill the concept and succeeded. The directors and producers were fooled by having the wrong person heading up the show, who's interest was to destroy it, and build himslef up.

Looks like the show may become an international hit, and give Geller another run.

Slim;

Thanks for your comment on my opinion of the problems with the USA Uri Geller show.

Half the time the show was about the odd man moderator rather than the performers. Without that distraction the performers could have been given more time, like in the other shows around the world. In some cases they get as much as ten minutes, a far cry from three, like in the USA.

I am also not sure that is was appropriate to have a person that works for CA to be an advisor for the show, especially since he belongs to the same factions that CA does. I am sure he did his best, but with strong opinions it was likely to effect the direction of the show in some or many ways.

Imagine if someone who was more positive concerning disclaimers, psychic and mystery entertainers would have been the advisor. No or less concern to keep the show "straight" in their opinion. An advisor can also act as censor. May not be good for the success of the shows premise. Just my opinion.

Gerry McCambridge must be wincing now, and scrambling to find a way to keep his spots from being re-broadcasted. Judging by the U.S. general public's reaction to Jim Callahan, I would think he'd be wincing too. I bet Jim Karol would like to quash any re-broadcasts also. Perhaps only Angela Funovitz and Mike Super should be pleased about this news. Eran and Ehud may not mind.

The greater issue at stake is whether the idea of mentalism as entertainment will suffer in the eyes of the TV-viewing world.

I do not think so. I would guess every one on that Uri Geller inspired show appreciates the visibility and face and name recognitions to millions of more people around the world. I would guess every one will tell you it helped them, got them more work and higher booking fees. You are expressing your own opinion as an "insider."

Generally in the entertainment business any publicity is good publicity, and to most this would be good publicity. All who were on the show looked good in the own way. As is often said by public figures, "Just spell my name right!"

I bet many other performers who post here would tell you they would have rather been on the show than not!

In my original listing I left out Guy Bavli. Sorry. A top performer as well.

Best wishes

I believe that the CTV/Canada reference might be slightly out of context. CTV often acts as an affiliate or buys programming from the U.S. networks and shows the programming at the same time as the networks do in the U.S.

CTV (I believe) broadcast the original airings of Phenomenon in Canada. I'm not aware of any plans to re-broadcast the shows, although I'm happy to be shown to be mistaken.

Your post just inspired me to go to Gerry McCambridge's home page at http://web.mac.com/gerrymccambridge/Mentalist/Home.html

A voice comes on, stating that Gerry McCambridge was on "the smash hit show Phenomenon"...etc.

Talk about trying to turn a pig's ear into a silk purse!

As someone knowledgeable on both the inside and the outside, do you believe that Phenomenon was perceived by the TV-viewing audience as a "smash hit show"?

(I guess GM can't resist career faux pas? Or is deception not only the nature of mentalism, but also of good PR?)

Arnon:

Bashing Gerry McCambridge does not make sense. He is one of the most successful mentalists in the business. He had a special on NBC, and is getting another ready. He is the only mentalist in history to headline a casino in Las Vegas, and is to this day headlining there, and is in high demand for club dates. He was picked out of hundreds, or thousands to be on the show, and though he did not win, he presented himself well and made himself more recognizable throughout the world.

As to his appearance on the Uri Geller show here are some quotes from and about Gerry.

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 3 /On the heels of his recent participation as a contestant on NBC's reality series "Phenomenon," mentalist Gerry McCambridge (http://www.mentalist.com/) is in high demand. So much so, that upon returning to Las Vegas, where he's a headliner at Hooters Casino Hotel, he signed a new contract to perform an additional night at the popular venue. Famous for his ability to read minds and influence thoughts, McCambridge can now be seen live in Vegas five nights a week.

"This is an exciting career step," McCambridge says. "Mentalism is an art form Vegas has never seen before, so being asked to perform another night in 'Sin City' is a true testimony to my show. Of course, competing in the reality show 'Phenomenon' and performing every week on live TV in front of millions of people helped play a major role in this achievement."

After NBC conducted an intensive search for the best mentalists in the world, McCambridge was one of 10 contestants chosen to compete for the $250,000 prize. The Wednesday-night series premiered on October 24 and drew 9.5 million viewers.

....re-signing with Hooters for another night has really been the ultimate reward," McCambridge says. "Demand for my performance here, as well as private shows nationwide, is now bigger than ever. "

I'm not "bashing" Gerry McCambridge - I'm just pointing out the false hype that he himself is dishing out first thing and prominently by vocal presentation on his website. I noticed that you didn't dispute my statement that Phenomenon was not "the smash hit show" Gerry hyped it to have been.

I'm putting aside "the hype quotes" and remembering that cringing smile Gerry McCambridge had on his face every time he was up to be voted on. Don't you remember that look?... that look of <"oh no, I did so poorly, please be kind and vote for me.">

I auditioned, as well as other members of this forum, and there were not "thousands" of mentalists auditioning, nor was NBC searching for "the best mentalists in the world."* If you need further evidence on this, I will dig up the factual sources from which I am drawing.

Please don't try to hype us - it's insulting to our intelligence.

You said to me:

"If you need further evidence on this, I will dig
up the factual sources from which I am drawing."

With all respect I too would like for you to do this please.

I hope your attitude is not just sour grapes.

It seems when you auditioned you had eight
or ten chances to be picked like very one else.
Those who were picked got to be seen by millions around the world.

They made the final cut, you did not.

that's the way the nail writes.

Better luck next time.

Please prove me wrong by digging up those factual sources.

Otherwise, please do not try to hijack this topic.

I was meant to be about Uri Geller.

My best,
Dick
