I buy a lot of DVD movies on Amazon.com. In the past I have noticed that whenever I'm watching a movie, usually about halfway through the movie the playback will pause or stutter for a second or two and the sound cuts out for a second. I was wondering if this was a sign that the DVD I'm watching is a bootleg. Not all of my DVDs do this. By the way, I watch my DVDs by using my PlayStation 2 as a DVD player. I don't know if this is a factor or not which is causing this phenomenon. Any ideas or comments?

No, it's a double-layer disc and that's the switch to the second layer.

A few questions if you don't mind?
Do you have any problems playing games on your Playstation2 like the game freezes? How old is your Playstation2? When was the last time you used a DVD Lens Cleaning Disk on the Playstation2? Over a year ago I was having trouble with my Playstation2 in terms of having problems loading. The console was about 5 years old, so I got a new one. In terms of buying DVDs from online are they used? They might be a little dirty. If you haven't done so yet I would recommend that you get a DVD Lens Cleaning Disk (At most retailers that sell DVDs should have them) and make sure the Disc will work in Playstation2 before you buy it and try that. You would highly recommend that you read the instructions to the Playstation2 and see what they suggest. Ron |

I'm surprised, though, that the makers of DVDs permit this momentary "skip" in the playback to occur when the player switches to the second layer. One time, by coincidence, the "skip" occurred during an important bit of dialogue. Granted, I only missed a second or two of the dialogue, but it was a crucial piece of dialogue. Oh well. Looks like DVDs might become a thing of the past anyway with Blue-Ray, etc.. |

Blu-ray discs can skip as well.
I have a top of the line Sony Blu-ray player, and when I play rented Blu-ray discs, they some times freeze or skip.

Nonetheless, get a DVD cleaning disc. Hint (save at least 10 bucks): a CD cleaning disc works just as well and is cheaper.

Working in the computer industry, I can say this. The cheaper the DVD player the less chance of the skip happening, most of the time.
I have a very nice High End DVD player ($200) and it sucks with the DL skip and playing homemade disks. I'm not talking bootlegs mind you, I am talking about putting my own footage to a DVD or after I have filmed a friend performing I transfer it to dvd. Yet the $20 set I have for my Kids from Wally-Mart works great... Go Figure!!!

I used to have this GREAT dvd player, it was really cheap and would play anything! I mean thing, avi, mpg, mp4, nero images, iso, it was crazy, until my ex broke it.
