I know some of you here are pretty good at digging up old information.

Can anyone help me locate some information on a book by William Rouse, Esq. of London?

He wrote a book called Doctrine of Chances that was published in 1814.

Don't be misled by a similarly titled book by Abraham de Moivre, that book was published in the 1700s and although it appears to cover the same subject matter, is a different book.

I'd also like any biographical information on Rouse that anyone can dig up. I know he wrote at least one other book called Remarks on the Comparative Value of Freehold and Copyhold Land. (Sounds riveting, I know.)

Anyone out there really good at tracking down this type of information?

Jason

PS: I know Rouse was from "Haskerton, near Woodbridge, in Suffolk" if that helps anyone. The Esq. appended to his name may or may not indicate he was a lawyer. It was often used in the UK to simply mean a "gentleman."

My vote goes for Tommy, the Internet digging wizard Smile

For this kind of old gambling(?) book, I would maybe only suggest to contact David G Schwartz, who is the director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada. He's being recognized as the "gaming's leading historian".

Iamslow, I definitely have to agree with you on this. This is why I come to the magicians for my help.

You know Iamslow I think that I'm a professional slacker as well now that I think about it.

I know about https://dspace.ucalgary.ca . Nice place... But find it not difficult. Probabbly digging is something more deep then just search on lists.

Ian,

Thank you. The book is in my possession though it doesn't belong to me. The owner asked me to see what I could track down on it. I've located 4 other copies in libraries/special collections, but have come up short on biographical information on the author.

"Remarks on the Comparative Value of Freehold and Copyhold Land" not a big book. It possible find like addition to The Pamphleteer (1815) and can be found on Internet. Need source? For me was not easy find information about author, but...

I find on The Insurance Cyclopáedia: Being a Dictionary of the Definition of Terms 1871:

In 1814 Mr. Wm. Rouse pub. The Doctrine of Chances; or, the Theory of Gaming;
and a few years later [prob, about 1820] he pub., The Doctrine of Chances; or, the Theory of Gaming made easy to every person acquainted with common Arithmetic : so as to enable them to calculate the prob, of events in Lotteries, Cards, Horse-racing, Dice, etc.; with Tables on Chance never before pub., which from mere inspection will solve a great variety of questions.
As we cannot fix the precise date of the pub. of the last-named work, which is
evidently only an enlargement of the former one, we shall review its contents at this point. The uses ..............

Interesting?

I find on "The Gentleman's Magazine" 1815 3 pages of review. Lot quotes from book. Interesting?

Unfortunately, I suppose on both last books there are no more information like taken from book...

Jason I've already mentioned it before here in forum. Look up Frank Garcia on how to detect crooked gambling it's a must,in my opinion a good book.

Don,

I'm very familiar with Garcia's How To Detect Crooked Gambling aka Marked Cards and Loaded Dice.

Since you may not have read the entire thing, be advised that this is a thread about another, very specific gambling book. It is not a thread on gambling books in general.

Jason,
Have you contacted Bill Palmer? He's pretty knowledgeable on the subject of older books, although his expertise is more related to Magic.

Squire. ... Landowner. Esq. Son of landowner. However it’s common for any bachelor to use Esq. Bit like Junior in USA. As far as I am aware it has nothing to with being a lawyer. Perhaps back then it was a formal thing.

Tommy,

In the U.S., Esquire is almost exclusively used by licensed attorneys. But since I knew Rouse was British, and since his book was published so long ago, I wanted to make sure anyone searching for him didn't automatically assume he was an attorney.

My guess is that he probably wasn't, but you never know.
