I am hoping to start a trend by reviewing magic related DVDs. I personally have been getting into Balloon Animals to upsell my birthday shows. Here are 3 DVD reviews. I will post a few more in a week or so.
Ken Stillman's SuperHeroes Team 1: Ken knows his stuff. This DVD teaches some superhero looking Balloons. They are NOT for line work (maybe the head alone). They take MANY balloons (10+ per sculpture). He uses Hearts (especially the Qualatex Blush, Red and Blue) 160's and 260's. The figures look AWESOME! These could be premade and given to a birthday boy for a WOW factor. I would rate the skill level as intermediated to advanced. I can't say enough about this DVD. That being said, the balloons take a while to make. 8 out of 10 (would be 10 but the sculpture take a while to make even once you have the techinques down) SurFIVE Them all Volume 2 Hearts: This DVD features 2 Dutch CBAs (Certified Balloon Artists)and was made to show the different uses of Heart Balloons. The first item Duckling is amazing and only uses 2 and a half balloons. This one item went into my repitoire immediatley. The rest of the items are either too time consuming for lines or not something I want (currently) to use. There is a great sea themed centerpiece (worth the price of the DVD) if you are decorating or entertaining at an appropriate party. If you thought that Heart balloons weren't really useful, prepare to have your eyes opened. There are a few small sculptures and quite a few large ones. Most are no suitable for line work (and many have a Dutch theme like the windmill and wooden shoeboat) These guys work big! Most of the material is pretty advanced. 7 out of 10. Twisted Critters Volume 1 (Patricia Brunell) There is a lot of squeeking on this DVD (unlike the above two) but other than that, BUY THIS DVD. Patricia has taken a simple hat base and made 13 differnt animal hats that are just perfect for line work. Most sculpture take 3-6 balloons and can be made rather fast. The Bunny Hat is worth the price of the DVD for a magician. 3 balloons fast, simple and lots of WOW. This is video gold for me. Pump these out for a line and you will get some awesome responses. 9.5 out of 10 (squeeking was annoying) That's all for this time. I plan on reviewing a few other Balloon DVDs if this post doesn't get taken down. Later Joe |
