Hi there,
A magician friend of mine gave me two doves a couple of days ago, a male and a female, deeply in love with each other I see (and hear!!!). Could this be a problem, or would it make the training easier? The female is much calmer than the male, and she easily stays on my hand, but whenever I take her out of the cage, the male flies out because he wants to stay near her. He doesn't land on me, though, at least not now. If I close the door and leave him inside, he starts moving too much because he wants his lady back. What should I do? I mean, should I take them out one at the time so that they can get used to me, or two at the time because otherwise they'll be too nervous? I fear it will be a problem once I start using harnesses and the like because they might be too nervous without each other. I also want to use them in a Tora cage where I usually produce a bunny, but I'm afraid they will make too much noise and kids will hear them if I'm at a birthday party or at a small show. |

Well, I've got a madly in love pair too, and I have no problems splitting them. When you place a dove into a dark and "cozy" compartment, be it a Tora cage or a dove pocket, it's dark and, like most animals, they are bound to keep quiet. Even noisy parrots know when to shut it when you place them into a dark bag. It's the darkness and uncertainty. Honestly, there's nothing to worry about!

Seems to me that you could use the Female dove to train the male.

Hi, like Kyle said, once the birds are in a dark space they always keep quiet, mine are so noisy in the garden however when performing don't make a sound. As far as training is concerned, try to handle them both as much as possible so they get used to you and don't fly away. Then...buy the Tony Clarke set of Dove dvds, really fantastic for dove work.
Hope this helps. Martin

If none of that works you could always raise Doves, with their help.
