Michael, If you are a member of IBM, SAM or Kidabra they each have insurance performer's liability insurance programs. Also you might check your homeowners or apartment renters policy for assistance. I have insurance through IBM.

Check out: the "Insurance" tab, and then "Performers Insurance" at http://www.specialtyinsuranceagency.com/
While their cost is a little bit higher than that offered through IBM, this group offers "Additional Insured Certificates" at no extra charge. Most others that I know of charge about $50 to provide you with an "Additional Insured" certificate, which many commercial establishments frequently require. Give em' a look. Thanks to Ralph the Great for turning me on to this provider. |

You don't say where you are located. if in the UK join Equity, the Entertainer's Union. They provide all of us with a most comprehensive cover designed to suit acts like ours - flash products are included - and you are covered for £10 million. The policy is with Royal and SunAlliance of London. £10 million is now considered the minimum cover required by Local Authorities who determine Health & Safety requirements here. They bind them into their approval procedures when licencing events, and all premises where entertainment takes place except for private homes. The open market is a minefield. Beware of exclusions - that's the bit to really read. Some cheap policies will half scare you to death when you read what is not covered. Sometimes it's just about everything. So read what they do cover but never presume - check those exclusions.

LVMagical is on the right path! Outstanding service and I have my additional insured certificates in my client's hands usually within a day of two of the request...at no extra charge. Outstanding support!

I get mine through the SAM. They just switched companies and it seems so far to be much better with more coverage in the laibility insurnace I have through them. As Bill mentioned, if you are a member of an organization, ask them if they are involved with a liability insurance prgram and if they can share information about it with you.
These days I am getting more and more clients wanting me to have insurance and asking for a copy of it then I ever had before. It seems like each year it is more and more a need to have it as it is being requested by clients. Clients such as malls, parks and recreations, festivals and fairs are all asking for them consistently. It is also just good business. Kyle

Many years ago I had insurance through COAI. Found service to be somewhere betwixt poor and slow.
Now I have a local agent and a policy through Farmers Mutual. One call and the certificate is faxed that day to the client's office. No additional charge for this service, and with some of the malls, it might be a list of eight or ten additional insureds. No answering machines, no muss, no fuss. |

My experience obtaining a SAM policy last year was a four month nightmare.
I won't be using them again. Speciality looks like a much better deal. Mark

I have been using the IBM insurance for years. Would not perform without it now.

SAM Insurance was having problems last year because they were in the middle of switching all polocies to a new company as well as having a new administrator to handle all of the SAM insurance and membership stuff. The combination did cause things to get done slower then usual. Things seem to be back on track now as I have mine and they did a good job getting it out to me. Just an FYI.

Like everyone said IBM, SAM, and Kidabra all have some sort of insurance. One thing to make sure of is if the place that you are performing at needs to be added as an Additional Insured. If you are doing many places that require this it can get expansive with some of the insurance.

I used http://www.clownsoftheus.com for about 8 years and loved it. No charge then for additional insureds. However, the rules are changing on that and they are all gettting a little more strict. I think the problem is they will not list a company as an additional insured, only individuals.... it may also be that they will only list someone for a specific event.
BE AWARE: A group policy like the ones you talk about will cover you as a performer, but if you send out another performer (who has their own insurance) and something happens, your company will also get sued and not be covered by your performers insurance. When we got to the point we were sending out more than just a few performers we had to change to specialty insurance for about $2000 a year. |

The S.A.M insurance keeps going up and it seems to me that just about everything that could happen is not covered under their policy. I even had to call repeatedly to get a Certificate for my records. This should have come with my renewal, I need to ask them for it?? So I have something to show my clients. What kind of service is that??
I'm looking into the Specialty Insurance .. I gave them a call today. Looks like they actually take care of things. I've never had an incident .. but, I do want to feel like my insurance company would back me if something should happen. Anyone ever had to turn in a claim?? Any opinions?? Steve |

None of the group insurance policies mentioned (IBM, SAM etc..)are available in Canada. We have ours through a regular business policy.
It costs more, but I wouldn't leave home without it. I just apply the money I'm saving on not having to have a rabbit licence to the premium. Rob |

Hey Donald,
I was just checking out the group liability insurance offered out of Ontario for Canadians. It was $325 + $100 + taxes. This would be a significant savings from my current business insurance except, this does not include coverage on my props outside of the home. Under my current policy, in addition to my liability coverage, I receive coverage on a basis of $100 paid per year for every $10,000 worth of props protected outside of the home. Since we often travel with thousands of dollars worth of props, it was no longer such a great savings if it meant that our props were uninsured should something happen to them. Our home insurance policy will not cover business property away from home either, according to our broker. If somebody has a cheaper way to get liability and prop coverage, I would be very interested. Thanks, Rob |

Specialty Insurance is great and fast. Also, as a DJ too, I am covered.

Every time I try to call Specialty Insurance I get a busy signal. It looks like they do not cover any animals (I am interested in coverage for a rabbit I will be adding in the future). Can anybody confirm that they do NOT cover rabbits?
Thanks, Eddie |
