I was recently trying to sell myself to a radio station and they say that they usually get clowns and magicians for free in exchange for a mention in the ad for the event and a mention on the website. Has anyone done this and is it worth it. Did you get calls from it or would it be a waste of time. I am currently considering exchanging an hour of magic for a bunch of advertising as a copunteroffer. Any thoughts??

When you say you were trying to sell yourself to the radio station, what do you mean exactly? To perform a show for them, or actually get on the radio?
If you're interested in some really fun ways to get publicity through local radio, I can recommend Sponsorships and Promotion for Magicians. Best, James |

Ah yes, the old work for free and get some publicity plan!
Do you really want to be one of those "clowns and magicians" they told you about? |

Over the years I have traded the services of various business I owned for media time. Specifically it work well for my printing business and chain of import stores. However, radio does not strike me as a way in 2008 to market the services of a magician. Would you buy those ads anyway? If the answer is "No". This doesn't sound like a very good idea.

I did a trade-out with a radio station about 15 years ago. While it was cool to hear my ads on the radio, I can't say it was worth the time I invested. My ads ran 75 times, and I got 1 call- which I did close. Still, I only did 2 shows for the 75 ads, so I didn't really put a lot on the line.

I would say no. My time and yours is always worth a guaranteed something. Publicity isn't guaranteed to do anything. I've done things for trade, but always something I could use. A free weekend at a resort was the best one.

Where I have used my services is as an attraction for a fundraiser where there is on-site radio. For the days in advance your name is mentioned as being there (you must specify you are to be incuded in all their media, and follow-up on this) you work the event, and may end up with an on-air interview. I am also able to select the event I want to work at and donate time to. (ie. Big Brothers, Cancer Research)
I have also used this as a way to "give-back" to the community. As I work mostly private, it also allows friends to come out and see me work and support a good cause (they are a source of referrals for me), and I will contact my own list of media with a press release. It keeps my name out there and increases my brand recognition. When I do my next direct mail people recognise my name, it helps. I did an event at Halloween last year for Cancer research, sawed a local radio personality in half. They mentioned it on their show. BUT...I let every other announcer on the radio that day on their station know what I would be doing. This became a source of "chat" the whole day on that station on each announcer's show. Media that I could not afford to pay for, and more real than a paid ad. (I have to say that I did once let a station give away one of my shows (MANY YEARS AGO) for air time, no real return for that. Some air play, but not a lot. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

I have done television ads and radio ads in the past. IT does work at times, but one thing I notice I get previous clients phoning and saying they saw or heard the ad and they tend to book a show.
I have done work for radio stations they will pay you cash but they do like to trade for ads, so do half and half...

Also, a good benefit of being on the radio or local TV is that it allows you to then put "as seen on NBC and Fox TV" in your marketing blurb.

I've done it. Had some great ads done. Ran 50 times during drive time. Got 2 calls. No bookings.
At least it only cost me some time ... |

But Starrpower, if your ads were well timed, I am sure they did not hurt your "brand" recognition in your market area.

Bob's point is dead on. Listen to the marketing professor. If you have no intention of running radio ads, then getting them for the cost of your time is not a great idea perhaps.
Don't ever let people sell you on the "exposure" idea. Eskimo's, the Donner Party, lots of people can tell you what happens with too much exposure. In today's day and age, radio in most markets is not what it used to be. Not by a long shot no matter what they tell you. It is not a great way to fill a room.

I know the issue is over for you now Joe, but still a great topic for discussion. I have not had success in radio trades.
We are in a business that is the best pyramid scheme there ever was! Every time you do a show you are getting paid to do an advertisement for your show. Seeing you in person or video on your site is the only true way they will know what they are going to get. Second place is a referral from a friend of theirs. Keep in mind most people will not ask for a card, however 6 months later they will be racking their brains trying to remember who that magician was so they can hire you for their party. How do you solve that problem? I think I will start a new post with that question. |

Happie hit on the real value of these radio remote broadcast trades - You're performing your act for potential clients and the radio remote is pulling these people in. I do them - not for the radio ads, which are nice but rarely pay off - but for the opportunity to increase my mailing lists and to distribute my marketing materials to prospective clients on site. I treat remotes the same way I would a trade show booth & stage time that I paid hundreds of dollars for. It isn't enough to walk up on stage, do your bit, say your name and walk away. The radio station is providing you with an opportunity to market your skills. So, from my perspective, it isn't about the "free" air time...it's about enhancing name recognition, presenting a killer live audition and extending your reach into a new market. Think outside of the box!
