Ditto what ptigue said.
Some titles would be a great help. Day 11
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house."

For those who are struggling to come up with their own presentations, it does take time and energy, but it's really not that difficult. I think developing a presentation for Gospel magic is easier than "regular" magic because the guidelines for your patter are already there. Here's how I do it.
First, make a list of different tricks you can do. Then, classify each by effect type.... Production - to make something appear Vanish - to make something disappear Transposition - to make something disappear and reappear elsewhere, or to make two things change places (one vanish and production, or two simultaneous vanishes and productions) Transformation - to change the appearance of something, or to change one thing into another Penetration - to make one solid object pass through another solid object Restoration - to make what was destroyed become whole Suspension/Levitation - to make something rise or float without visible means of support Invincibility - to make something invulnerable to destruction or defeat Escape - to break free from confinement Then, you need to think about what each of these effects could represent.... Production - creation; God's gifts; having a fruitful/bountiful life Vanish - something that's hiding (or trying to ); destruction; death Transposition - death and resurrection; going to Heaven; Christ taking our place Transformation - a new creature; removing sin; showing true colors Penetration - breaking through barriers; overcoming the impossible thru Christ Restoration - death and resurrection; being healed/whole; joining together Suspension/Levitation - ascending to Heaven; rising above Invincibility - defending against Satan's attacks; not being overcome by temptation, stress, or pressure Escape - breaking free from Satan/sin; overcoming the impossible thru Christ Once you figure out what your effects can represent, search out those topics in the Bible. Most Bibles nowadays have an index of verses listed by topic. See if one topic or story matches an effect more than the others, and there's your patter guideline. Now, just put it in your own words.

Great post Michael. That kind of leaves patter to the performer.

Great post Michael, I think I'll try that out today, and see what happens. =)

Didn't mean to step on anyone's toes. I'm sure many would still be interested in those DVDs, Terry. I just thought many may not know how to start writing for themselves. Once they do, it makes their routines more personal, easily remembered, and gives a sense of accomplishment. The writing also becomes easier with time, and the ideas seem to jump out at you when you see them. Just this afternoon, I started thinking about one effect (the Repeat Silk Vanish, which I've never even used), and different Gospel patter lines came to me out of the blue.
Following up with what I wrote above, it's just as easy to go in reverse (instead of matching a presentation to an effect, you match an effect to a presentation). Let's say you have a few different topics already covered and want to add another specific topic, but you haven't a clue what trick to use for it. If you break down the topic to its essential elements, you can then go back to your list of effects to find one that's appropriate. Here's an example: I work in my church's children's department. A few weeks ago, the lesson was on how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are separate and distinct, and how each one has a different "job" to do, but they all make up a whole. It's a very "tricky" subject to understand, especially for kids, so let's say you wanted to create an object lesson to illustrate the idea. You would first break down the topic into its essential elements - three separate and distinct things are part of a whole. Then, you can find an effect that would fit. Something that immediately pops into my head would be a Blendo effect. You show three silks of different colors, and then they blend to become one multicolored silk. Another idea would be the Chinese Laundry Ticket. You show a whole strip of paper, then tear it into three separate and distinct pieces, and then restore it to a whole. A couple nights ago, I was re-watching Daryl's rope magic DVDs. There's an effect of Pavel's on volume 2 called "Pavel's Rope Circles". This would be another good one. You show three pieces of rope, and you tie each one into a circle. They are all shown separate, but they turn into one big circle when tossed into the air. Easy-Peasy Happy writing!

Here's how I go about it, I think of the truth I want to illustrate and then find an effect to use. Sort of like buying shoes and then getting an outfit to go with them...lol
Actually more times than not, I'll see an effect and something pops in my head. Gospel magic really needs to be from the heart more than just memorized patter. If you don't feel it, your audience won't either. Sincere, heartfelt, teaching and preaching using magical effects is the most effective way to do them. If anyone is interested, I know I'm opening up a door...I can provide a few DVD's of one of my Kid's Rallies and you'll get to see how I go about putting together my Kid's Krusade type programs. Some of the stuff on the video...You will see me using the Ultimate Hank, Misers Dream, Coffee Vase and vent. They had asked if they could tape it, the camera man must have liked my wife, he kept on her...so they gave me a copy. So email me if you want a copy of a Kid's Rally DVD first come first serve (limited amount) ...it's not a great copy, it's not one I'm putting out, but just for those who might be interested in the Kid's Krusade type of ministry, at least you can pick up on the structure and the way I present the Gospel in that setting. |

I tend to start with the truth as well Terry. Most of the things that I've done haven't been shows, they've corresponded to the message that I was preaching/teaching. I already had the message and the effect just fit perfectly with the truth I was trying to get across. I think that for anyone writing gospel patter, the best thing that you can do is study, study, study. The more of the scripture you know, the more that God can bring to rememberance.

Yet, I found the spiritual apps for Tarbell to be rather lame(please, somebody tell me if they found a really good Gospel app in there; I haven't read the whole two volumes). Laflin has good stuff, Del Wilson's series is reasonable. On the other hand, the Tarbell series is worth owning for itself. Familiarity with it should help when you decide what Biblical concept you want to illustrate. John

Hey thanks John.
I'm looking for a copy of Tarbell's, but I may end up having to get them one at a time, over a long period. =) I'll also look for the Del Wilson series. Danton

I just had an idea....why not do "This Little Light of Mine" with D'Lite?
"Hide it under a bushel (close hand over it and disappear)...I'm gonna let it shine (produce it)" "don't let satan (blow out d'lite)..I'm gonna let it shine...(produce it again)" just a thought |
