Ok I hope this is the right place for it... but I was worried about what a friend told me. My buddy said that a dvd lasts about 10 years, a video cassette lasts about 15 years and books well depends on moisture and so on....So with that said for practicing purposes I have copied all my dvd's onto video tape and made double copies of my videos. This process take to long, does anyone know how to copy a dvd to dvd, I heard the copyright on a dvd doesn't let you do it but I also here that a lot people are copying there dvd's for back ups with no problems....someone please help, I don't want the dvds' I bought in 2000 to go bad.

Hi,In your situation you are right,if you do a back up in case of an unsuspected accident,if you don't make a Bussinnes about this,no problem. Now you need a computer with a DVD BURNER,you place the original dvd on the normal computer cd compartment and the blank one in the burner compartment and only do the burning process, its so simple...I hope help you...
Thanks,
Hansel!

Think ur buddy's timing was off, a video tapes life expectancy is about 5 years, a DVD is about 100 years. Books if kept dry and stored well can last a long time as well.

Photius- it does depend on the DVD; CD's and DVD's, especially writable ones, do have a shelf life of about ten years. However, I've never had even my oldest store-bought CD's or DVD's stop working, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

Books will essentially last forever- archaeologists have recovered journals written by Roman soldiers, so barring fire or flood, you can expect your books to outlive you (though you may need to rebind them eventually.)

The most emphereal type of data storage is electronic. I hope you're making regular backups of your hard drive. Of course, data loss isn't the only problem- media or software obsolescence is also an issue. Do you still have any 5 1/2" floppies around? Good luck finding a drive which will read them, much less any software that can access the data. The first thing I do when I get a .pdf file is print it out on paper; it's one of the reasons I'll never buy e-books. I like having a hard copy around, since eventually no program will read .lit files anymore...
