Hi fellow magicians Smile

I have been doing magic for some time already, have performed some gigs, most of them for charity and now want to make it a part-time professional. And this is why I am asking you advice.

What is the best way to jump from no money making to steady income performing magic? How did you guys get your first gigs? And what books would you recommend to a guy like me?

Send a PM to Jim Snack and get his course. It will tell you what you can expect at what levels and really spell it out nice. This way you have some realistic expectations to work from.

I have said this before, but since you are new here I will say it one more time.
1. You need business cards
2. You need 8 X 10 glossy photos.
3. You need a promotional package.
4. It goes without saying that you need professional props.
5. You need a professional look, so costumes are very important.
6. Go to the yellow pages of your local phone book, and look up entertainment. Everything that is not an escort service, or a DJ call up and send them your litterature.
7. Find your local parents magazine and place an ad in the entertainment section.
8. Sit home and answer the phone on the first ring, There are a series of standard questions that people will ask you, so memorize your answers and fire them off like you know what you are talking about.
9. A smart performer has a web site, but that is not an over night prosess.
My fee for this priceless advise is nothing, because I'm not fond of marketing courses.

Thanks, Al

I already have 1-5, but I'm stuck right now on the marketing part. I really would love to get a restaurant job and then have further bookings from there. I sent emails to restaurants, but the mistake I made was probably sending them to the reservations desk, not the GM.

I ordered the Highway to Success book and am still waiting for it to get here. I looked at Jim's and Eric's sites and they both look good. But since I already ordered a book, they will have to wait.

Restaurants
Go to the restaurant of your choice for dinner, do a trick for, and give your card to every member of the staff you see, and when you are presented with your bill ask to speak to the manager, he will be delighted to speak to you. Make your pitch, and give him a card. After you get the job ask them to display your picture, and business cards in a promenent place. You don't need no stinken marketing course, all you need is common sense.
