What do you do to get people to remember you?
Have you ever wondered how many people are at home racking their brains trying to remember your name from a show 2 months ago and can't, so they end up hiring someone else instead. I give out a magic trick postcard to every kid at every show from a living room to 400 seat theatre (especially those ones). At least then they go home with my name, phone number, and web address. also, Its cheesy, but I have the kids say the old - M: well that's the end of that trick A: ahhhhh, B. Happie (my stage name) M: but I have another trick A: yeahhh! I put a joke at the beginning of the show as an excuse to do it. The first time I tell the kids to say this they are usually a little quiet, so I tell them, "This is important! How many of you have seen a magician before?" I ask one of the kids raising their hand, "What was the magicians name?" pause as the kid has no response or says they don't know Then I say, "That's why this is important." I have yet to have a kid actually remember the magicians name, but now and then they point at me and say "it was you." That gets a laugh too. So I smile and ask another kid. What do you do to get people to remember you? |

There's no one thing. It takes constant reminders. I send pre-birthday greeting cards a month before past client's birthdays. I send monthly e-Newsletters filled with crafts, jokes, a magic trick and a schedule of family activities happening around town...as well as my public appearance schedule for the month. My newsletters include subtle reminders that I'm available for PTA functions, sports banquets, Blue & Gold banquets, yada, yada, yada. I run contests at my public appearances to collect birth dates, addresses and emails. I scan the newspapers for the names of kids I've performed private parties for - Honor Roll listings, sports, Scouting, church functions, hospitalization - and send the clipping along with an appropriate personal note. I don't catch them all - but I catch enough. I'm not just "some guy they hired" - I'm practically part of the family.
Marketing is an ongoing, never-ending process. You can't give out a card at a party and think they'll remember you eight months later.
How you leave others feeling after an Experience with you becomes your Trademark.

I can not imagine how to do it as a childrens entertainer. My guess is you would have to target more the adults than the kids.

In addition to Skip's great suggestions, here's a few things I do to get my contact information into the kids hands with the hope that one or more will make it home and hang around for a while:
At every kids show, I give each attendee either a Secrets of Magic Coloring Book which has a sticker affixed stating "Courtesy of MagicAL..." with web and phone contact information, OR a magician coloring page which of course includes contact info as well. My hope is that these items make it home to mom and dad and perhaps maybe even make it onto the refrigerator or some place special. I frequently hand out the "Fortune Telling Fish: with two stickers attached to each plastic pack. One sticker is my own fortune chart, re-designed with more kid-friendly "fortunes", the other sticker includes a "Provided by MagicAL" again, with web and phone info. At shows, I frequently hand out FREE TICKETS. The FREE TICKETS are printed on business card stock on my home printer. One side says "Just for Fun FREE TICKET It's not good for anything, but it's FREE!" The other side says: "I won this ticket at a MagicAL Show and again, includes web and phone info. Occasionally, I'll autograph this card for the kids. Although I don't do this (yet), I know Ken Scott promotes having your name and web address printed on a sign affixed to the front of your performing case. The thought is that parents who take pictures of you and your kid volunteers during the show will have photographic evidence of a way to get in touch with you when they see the show pics weeks and months later. How about using your name in your patter during the show? There are several creative ways to include a repetition of your name during the show....perhaps a running gag of sorts in which the kids eventually recite your name before you get a chance to say it yourself. Hope these ideas help! |

Have a local sign shop make something nice with your name, or a logo if you choose, to display on your table or backdrop, etc. during your whole performance
It worked for the Rock Group KISS...they were one of the first bands to have their Logo onstage with them the whole time. Whose going to forget that name? Now EVERYBODY does that! |

Good point, but I hardly think KISS were the first.
Didn't just about every band in the sixties have their name written on the bass drum? |

Steve Shaw tells a story on one of his PSI DVD, of how MC's often use to forget his real name "Steve Shaw", just as they were about to introduce him, because his name was so simple and plain (ie. forgettable). To solve this problem, he came up with the name Banachek. He said that he chose thismname because he liked the TV show, and it contained two hard consonants. The MC's never forgot his name at the Mic again. And the name-change stayed.
Very valuable insights (and great DVD series). Thanks Steve! Jonathan

... now if you could change your name legally to "What's his name", then you might be remembered! Or are you paradoxically forgotten?
Sorry, B. Happie.... I could not resist! Back to the subject at hand... which is a valid one. Perhaps you might wish to check out a relatively "old" but content-rich thread, entitled... Yeah, I got in trouble with the crop circles. I changed my name to a symbol so it was easier to mow and got sued by the artist formerly and now known again as Prince. :o)
These are all great ideas! I am really impressed with Skip's ideas. If I didn't have 2 small children, a wife, and 1000 shows a year I book for me and my performers, I may be able to do all that! Joking aside- those really are amazing ideas! I do have a postcard reminder system in place. I got the ideas from a friend of mine (Bruce Bray). Every show that is booked I print out 4 postcards on one sheet of card stock and file them into a filing cabinet that has a folder for every day of the year. One postcard says that the deposit was received (cards don't get filed til this one goes out), one is a thank you for the day after the party reminding them to review us on http://www.superpages.com (you can see our reviews by going to superpages and looking for magicians, NJ), the next one goes out 9 months after the party (3 months prior to next year) and the last one goes out 10 months after. At this point, we send out about 4000 postcards a year and it is worth every penny. That doesn't mean I don't cry every time postage goes up! |

Did you ever see Bodene? he used his name throughout the show. By the end, everyone was chanting it.
I have my name on a poster, on the rabbit wand and on a few handkerchiefs for photographic opportunities during the program Some performers and buskers might make a comment like "If I can find your card in my wallet then you must admit that bhappie must be the best magician that they've seen all day. So let's find out if I am the best magician today" (this verbiage can also be used to promote a clients features and benefits)

HHey Jay... great hooks and practical suggestions.
The fact that you happen to have four eyes in your head must add to your recall factor! Who could forget! lol Jonathan

I also use a sign that is my custom designed logo that fits on my suitcase table with velcro. This way my name and brand is freshly seen the moment I set up till I leave. Also, every photo tha is taken also has my logo in it so that I am branding myself long after the show is over.
I also have a clapper board. Whenever I see someone taking a picture or about to video tape (which is allowed), I have fun with it. I state that pictures are fine but if they take a picture I have to know in advance. The reason is simple. If you take a picture with all this motion of the show.. your pics look like this (make a funny face). SOOOO I fixed that problem. I bring out a clapper board that also has my name on it and URL as well and we pose for the shot. It gets a great laugh but also helps them to remember who I am. I use an Axtell drawing board in the show and on that I also have my name so it is on there as a show clock and my name before I start to use it. All these are very simple ways in which to get your name out while the show is actually taking place. Kyle

I use two "methods": My performance suitcase for kid shows (EXCELLENT LEFLER MODEL) have my name printed on in BIG bold letters on the Front. The second one its only my name:Im Hansel and here in Puerto Rico most people relate Hansel with Grettel (The children Story) and they remember it for that...Oh Hansel....where is Grettel?Or oh Hansel and Grettel or something like that...Now here I like your opinion...
If I am Hansel...Is a good idea name one of my doves or the bunny Grettel??? Or only is a crazy non original idea??? Thanks, Hansel!

Hi Hansel -
Yes, that's a good idea. Gretel would be a good name for your bunny or your signature puppet. - Donald

Many of you are very good at this! BTW I love the Grettel the bunny idea- I would do that right away.
Just to recap- I have a sign for the front of my table I have the kids yelling my name between tricks I send out postcards throughout the year I give every kid a postcard at the show I have an easy to remember name that goes with a song! It amazes me that even though I do all of these things, I still have customers who forgot my name. My name is B. Happie.... Don't worry, B. Happie. It doesn't get any easier. Maybe I need my bunny to be named Bobby McFarrin. Crop circles are starting to look really good! |
