I was out the other night at a bar & someone asked me to do some magic.I did my copper silver, brass routine & started building up a crowd. I did an ambitious card routine ending with card to mouth. The crowd was enjoying everything, so I decided to try out a sponge ball routine that I have been working on for a while.
So I asked a girl to help me out, I only got through the first phase of the routine. One in my hand & one in hers,I told her that her ball was going to jump into my hand. When I opened my hand & the ball was gone, she started freaking out. I had her open her hand & when she saw the two balls in her hand, she screamed & ran off. After that, the crowd just dissipated & no one talked to me for the rest of the evening. People kept giving me weird looks all night. It wasn't so much a negative reaction to the magic as I have experienced before. This was just plain weird. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Thanks, Mike |

Hi Mike,
The way people react has been discussed a couple of times on the Café. I've had people back away in awe and one woman almost fell over. You just never know what may happen. |

An entire crowd walking away after getting a great reaction is nothing I have ever experienced before. Usually, after something like that, the rest of the crowd wants to see more. It's no big deal, I just found it strange. Mike |

That's pretty nutty alright. Sometimes there is simply no good reason for people's reactions...

These reactions can be my favorite. They mean that for atleast a split second, tha person considered the possibility that what you were doing is real. If you got this reaction with sponge balls then consider that a compliment to your performance. That means not only did you do your sleights right, but your timing and routining was correct. When these are done well, you don't fool their eyes, you hit em right between the eyes fooling their brain. I can't explain the reaction of everyone else after that. I've gotten some great reaction with sponge balls. Actually better reactions than I thought you could get with some funny looking clown noses, but I've never had anyone scared of me after I've done them. It seems as if the crowd was a bit freaked out. Perhaps it was just an effect of having a girl scream and run off.
I think you will just have to label this experience in the odd category. I'm sure this may never happen like this again. I've gotten people to run off screaming but it's usually a finale or it actually gets more people interested. Just this weekend I did a quick little thing for a waitress. I placed a card on the table talked to her a bit and told her to think of a card. She named her card and with no switches I had her flip over the card on teh table...it was her card. NOw this was just a simple psychological force, but before she flipped it over she said "There's no way that could be it"....when she flipped it over she screamed and ran to other side of the room. This is the first time I've had someone do this with this particular effect and it was odd because she was on the job, yet she ran across the room screaming. That's not exactly etiquette for a waitress. Sometimes you just can predict what people will think of but you can't predict how they will react. I just wanted to add this because you're story reminded me of that. I also brought a girl to tears when doing Stigmata. It was the playing card revelation, not even a person's name. It was nice that my performance was that convincing but I'm not sure I like making people cry. You just can't predict all reactions.

Thanks J.C., you seem to understand it perfectly. It was just something that I had never experienced before.
Spongeballs, of all things getting this kind of reaction? very strange indeed! Mike |

The crowd split because the girl screaming and running off was the climax of your act. Coool!!

Sometimes when I approach girls to perform for them, their pepper spray brings tears to MY eyes.

Ichazod, you are in good company. I once performed Slydini's sponge balls and purse frame routine during my stage act. If you are not familiar with the routine, you are sitting at a table, across from your spectator, and as the finale, you load a huge gob of MINI sponge balls in their hand,(20, 30 or more) and when they open their hand, they literally explode everywhere.
Well, I was doing it for a cute lady spectator, and she opened her hand, the tiny sponge balls sprayed everywhere in all directions all over the stage, and she literally SCREAMED at the top of her lungs right there on stage with a full auditorium of people watching.. It was one of those Kodak moments...
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.
