Hi guys,
Since I have trouble with aching elbow and finger joints, I was wondering if there are any suggestions for excercices etc to get my joints better working again, because it is pretty embarrassing having these troubles when trying to perform tricks with cards, coins etc. I have already tried pain killers, salves, acupuncture, TCM. Thanks in advance. |

I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on television; however, there are a few things you can do.
1) take a couple of days off from the things that are making your hands hurt. 2) I had a bad problem with what one might call "pre-carpal tunnel syndrome." I used a combination of massage and acupressure. It took about two months for it to go away, but it finally did. 3) If you play the piano, use the Juilliard piano calisthenics for the hand.

My doctor says most things don't work, so I need to adjust. I am, however, going to try magnetic therapy since I have heard good things about it.
I am also using Corn Huskers Lotion so that I can handle cards without so much force or strain- it seems to help. Lastly, I am altering my magic to use more "finger friendly" gear, such as sponge balls, rope, silks, etc. as well as card effects that require less knuckle busting. I can still do a classic coin palm, but people ask why I have such a pained expression! Jim

I guess they don't call it "Knucklebusting" for nothing.
I'm more and more reverting to "finger friendly." No major pain yet, but I can definitely feel something going on that wasn't there before. I've pretty much "retired" from guitar playing, instead I'm learning the Hammered Dulcimer which doesn't require the finger stretches and dexterity of other stringed instruments. I'm primarily focusing now on con game style things, Shells, Fast and Loose, things like that.

I would suggest you to seek a specialist advice (a doctor) because only a doctor can make the wright diagnosis: many diseases like rheumatoid arthritis can manifests with such simptoms but it is necessary to have some blood tests done and above all a clinical assessment. The fact that more than one joint is involved means that you need help.
One more advice: don't look for advice over the internet. Take care. |

I suffer with arthritis. I had tried the gamut of modern pain killers. It wasn't until an arthritis specialist recommended aspirin, that I found my miracle. If you find it's worse before cold precipitation, and gets better with activity, it may be worth a try.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your input. I have seen several doctors so far and I know what is wrong with my elbow (unfurtunately, I don't know the right English medical term for it, I forgot to look it up)It's a kind of inflammation of the elbow sinew. Each of them told me a different therapy so I felt like a guinea pig in the end. I have returned to alternative healing methods such as homoepathics and I found out that excercises like trying to lit a match with only one hand, using a rubber squeezing ball and rolling 2 of those Chinese chiming metal balls helps a bit plus looking for "finger friendly" tricks (that's why my focus is on bizarre magic). |

The medical term for that is probably either tendonitis or bursitis, depending on whether the tendons or the bursa are inflamed. A common term for the general condition is "tennis elbow." The cure for it may be as simple as the Olson and Johnson cure. Olson and Johnson were two vaudeville comedians. In one of their sketches, one of them enters the doctor's office. "What's the problem?" "It hurts when I do this. What should I do?" "Don't do that." Not to make fun of your condiion, though. About 25 years ago, I smacked my elbow into a 4x4 post that was one of the supports of the balcony of the theatre I worked in. I caught the edge of the post right at the point where the ulnar nerve runs through that joint. It hurt like CRAZY. My fingers still tingle from it.

I've had knee problems due to years of skydiving, martial arts, and running. I had a doctor tell me to look into Glucosamine for sore joints. It does take a long time to get in and working 6-8 weeks, but I'm back running again...

I was using ALEVE with great results. But since my stroke ALEVE or anything like ADVIL or ASPIRIN is a NO NO... so now I just have to live with the pain.
You might try fish oil daily, but glucosamine etc. seems to work for only a few. Didn't help me. MAQNETICS HAVE BEEN PROVEN NO GOOD AT ALL.

I've tried Tiger Balm -- it comes in two strengths -- strong and DON'T GET ANY OF THAT IN YOUR EYE!
Ironically, with all of the interesting salves, cremes, balms and nostrums, most of them are menthol and methylsalicylate. Sometimes these things can burn you. I found one called "Biofreeze" that massage therapists use. It's really expensive. Then CVS came out with generic knockoff. It costs about a third as much. There are also the capzaicin derivitaves, such as zostrix snd zovirax. They have capsicum in them. This is a very old herbal remedy that comes from peppers. Don't get it in your eye.

That's true. Use of the "magic ingredient" in certain topical pain relievers was what led to the discovery of both of these. The topicals are usually sold under a name that is or is similar to Capzaicin.

I'm no doctor, but I've helped friends keep their medical costs down. Learn the proper way to wrap your elbow, to relieve the strain from "tennis elbow", at least until it heals.
For joint pain, take a good glucosamine and chondroitin supplement. I take one because I was was just diagnosed with arthritis in the foot. I recommended that a friend take it, because her doctor wanted to grind down the vertebrae in her neck, to help with her arthritis and a pinched nerve that was causing extreme pain. She had complete relief after 10 days on the supplement, although she has some numbness in her fingers left from the pinched nerve. It's best to take care of the root problem. Long term use of analgesics can cause liver damage. |
