OK guys and gals...pay back time...Old Higley needs some help.
I have a single piece of ungimmicked rope, aproximately 2 1/2 feet long. (actually cord from sweat pants (haha) I currently have 2 things I can do with it. 1. Eye Of The Tiger (Thread the Needle) and 2. A really nifty instant One Handed Knot (jerk the rope and it knots itself) I came up with. Does anyone have any direction to add to this? I'd like 5 or 6 different things I can do with it. No actual cuts...mostly just manipulation tricks and moves like in the two I lsted. It can be any single piece of rope or string as long as I can pocket it. Not looking for free info unless it's free. Aim me please. Doug

Hi Doug
You can buy the Dennis Loomis "knot routine plus" DVD, or you can buy the Karl Fulves book called "self working rope magic" Good Luck Al

There was a thread on this a little while back called "What do do with one rope" which I think explored most of the options. And with a small gimmick (as introduced by George Sands) a whole world of non-cutting rope magic opens up.

You could also do a wrist tie routine.

The second half of Daryl's acrobatic knot is a great one rope routine too. The color change is not necessary for the trick to work.

Just a piece of rope. I just found an old 'My Favorite Rope Trick' (Prof.Nightmare)
and I snagged the longer one for keeping with me rather than the Cord from the old pants. I don't know what a Jardine Ring is. I did make a 'knot' and now have to learn how to do a false knot. I try to learn all this stuff on my own but with knots it could take a lifetime!

Welcome to the world of rope magic. There are hundreds of sources for creating a rope routine that is all yours, but you must have some idea of what you want to do with the rope. L&L publishing has a DVD out featuring a bunch of great rope routines and perhaps that DVD will give you some direction.

The key word here is precision. You'll fool yourself with this beautifully made piece of magic. All of the standard transpositions and penetrations are possible including this classic: Spectator holds his hand in a fist with his thumb pointing straight up. A handkerchief is spread over his hand and the solid brass ring is placed over the tip of his covered thumb. Now the magician merely taps the ring and it's gone. Spectator's hand is uncovered and there is the ring, right over his thumb! Rope effects are possible with this gimmick.

OK...Fair question. I don't perform anymore but let's say I'm at Disneyland just hangin' out and I have this piece of rope... I added a One Hand 'Hangman's' rope to the above two things I mentioned. Jardin Ellis Ring: Cool but not part of my simplicity goal. Just a piece of rope. A bit of Will Rogers envy. Interesting...I hear some passion creeping in here in the answer posts. Thanks so far.

Doug, I’ve got a whole act using just one length of rope. You can consider adding a sliding knot segment, i.e., the rope is shown with a knot tied in the center. The knot is grasped and “moved” toward one end of the rope and displayed at the new position. Then the knot is grasped and “moved” toward and off the other end where it vanishes (two slip knots is all that is needed).
Then the knot instantly reappears on the center of the rope (one hand instant knot). The knot is untied and then the Hunter’s knot is tied and dissolved (shoelace/bow tie). The audience is involved with Hunter’s impossible knot (you do as I do thing) where a knot is tied in the center of the rope while holding both ends). You get the knot to tie but they can’t. Finish with you removing the Hunter’s impossible knot set-up from the spectator and having the knot appear in the rope showing that the spectator could do the knot too. Put in the bits and pieces you already know and you have a fairly lengthy, flexible, magical, and potentially entertaining routine using just a short length of rope or string.

You can do a 5 minute rope routine with one piece of rope and the Dennis Loomis DVD, and when I do his finish move I usually make jaws drop. Dennis's routine also lends itself quite easily to some one line zingers. I feel that I know you well enough to think that this is a rope routine you will love. One word of caution is this is a routine that requires about 6 months to master.

Hey Harry! So glad you 'chimed'.
OK...With a three foot piece of rope... I do the Eye of the Tiger The One Hand The One Hand Hangman's (used by a one armed hangman of course). And like I said I made a 'knot' (extra) but I don't yet know how to tie the rope so when you run your hand down it it releases (slip knot?) so you can toss the extra knot. I'd like to learn the Hunter's for sure. Al, as to the Loomis DVD...seems like a no brainer proposition once I can finance such a major purchase(groan)...as to 6 months...well, my attenion span requires about 5 1/2 moths to be cut off that schedule...since I'm a good 'gleaner' and never do another performer's routine, I'm sure I could have enough ideas sparked for a personal routine pulled out in a couple of weeks. (I will never 'master' it...Ineptness is my charm )

Then spend $5 and buy the Karl Fulves "Self working rope magic" book and have at it. As I said before you could take this idea 100 different directions. I was just trying to feel you out (no pun intended). If I can be of any other service to you this is one of the forums that you can find me.

That sounded cranky...Geez Al...I was in agreement with the Loomis DVD. I definitely want it...Just need to wait a couple of weeks till I get my allowance.
I was saying I could pull out some ideas to make it worthwhile but you're reading with your grump glasses? By the way where is the Hunter described and taught?

We have communicated many times here at the Café, had lots of laughs together, but this is the first time I have had the chance to help you, and I'm sorry if it is coming off like I'm grumpy. Us old farts must stick together. I learned the hunter puzzle when I was a kid, but Dennis Loomis teaches it. The Hunter bow knot I learned from Daryl.

Daryl's "expert rope magic made easy". There is more cool stuff in those three DVD's than you can shake a stick at. I deleted that post because you expressed reluctance to spend money on the Dennis Loomis DVD, so I changed my recommendation to the Karl Fulves book.

Just to put in my two cents, I'd like to recommend Flip's Truly Magical Rope Magic Dvd along with the Fulves book and Daryl's "expert rope magic made easy" dvds.
