Wow. Guys, I just read the latest messages. Thanks so much.
I received permission from Reel Magic to post two tricks from the book on YouTube (they shot them). I just uploaded the tricks, but they don't appear yet (it takes a few hours). You can search my name and/or the names of the tricks: Change for a Five ...and... A Quiet Goodbye Thanks again, and I hope this coming year is a happy, productive, peaceful year for us all. David |

AWESOME! Thank you for uploading. Both effects completely sold me on the book when I first saw them. They both fooled me quite badly!

Concerning "Jewel Thief", notice that the world record has been done in a famed Paris store, 2 weeks ago (more than 100 million of dollars, 85 million euros) in diamonds and valuables.
That can be a nice introduction sentence. |

Just got my copy of Approaching Magic from David today along with his autograph! What can I say but Wow! This is one BIG book! I can't wait to wade into it after reading all the great things that everyone has said about it and seeing the two video demos of tricks contained within.
Thank you David! Mike |

I am having a hard time sharing everyones enthusiasm for this book.
I have spent a good bit of time going through the book and although I admire David's creativity I am not getting as much out of it as I hoped. I just don't get the impression that the effects in this book are real "workers", at least I feel that most of them probably won't become workers for me. And, I guess I feel that this is the type of book geared to a magic hobbyist who is more interested in performing magic for other magicians. Not that there is anything wrong with that it just isn't what I am interested in. I like "A Quiet Good-bye" but this is the only effect at this stage that I can honsetly say that I will consider adding to my repertoire. "Change for a Five" looks very good on video! But I am VERY skeptical as to its effectiveness as a close up effect in the real world. A lot of other effects in the book require you to have something or to make something too. This is ok in small doses but a LOT of effects seem to require this. I agree with David's essay, "One Thing Happens" but unfortunately there seem to be very few effects in the book in which just one thing happens. Am I the only one who feels this way? Has anyone added any of the effects to their shows?

For me, one of the best things about Approaching Magic is that it appears to be a book of routines that the creator has actually performed for real audiences. With so much of the magic in print, that doesn't seem to be the case. I suspect that much of your lack of enthusiasm for the book comes down to venue. David Regal creates magic for the settings in which he, himself, performs. He's not a restaurant magician or a close-upper who pays the mortgage by table hopping - so his focus is not on routines for those venues. When you say the routines are not real workers, I think what you are actually saying is that they are tricks designed, not for commercial table hopping, but for a formal act. It's certainly true that the best routines in Approaching Magic were created for formal performance - either in a Magic Castle style close-up act, or in a stand-up show. That really appeals to me because good stand-up material is hard to find. If your venues are restaurants, weddings and banquets, on the other hand, you might be frustrated to find a majority of material that you can't use. Personally, the only frustration I had with some of the routines was that David's main venue seems to be The Magic Castle, which is a venue specifically created for the performance of magic. It, therefore, has slightly more ideal performing conditions than can often be found elsewhere. This means that a fantastic routine like "The World's Greatest Invention" can't find a place in my regular act because my own stand-up venues often have an audience on three sides. |

Perhaps not Every trick will make it into your repertoire, but where are you going to find a book like that? Many of the great presentations written here could be adapted to tricks you already do. Regal is a very creative guy. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

Hi
I was led to believe (from various posts) that this was only ever going to be available from David himself via his web site - which is why I ordered from him, with shipping costs it came to $105. I now find that Alakazam (UK & US dealer) are selling this for £49.95 ($75 approx). Very annoying! Regards to all Matt |

Hi All -
The book has entered a second edition, which was purchased by Murphy's, so the book is now being sold through stores. If requested, I will sign or inscribe copies that I sell directly (I am doing it only on request for now, assuming that some prefer a sealed book). David |

I met David at a convention this past week and picked the book up from him there. My only regret is not picking it up sooner. I've not been able to make much of a dent in it yet (still recovering from the convention!) but every item in his lecture was taken from the book. From what I've seen, and read so far, it's very on par with the quality of material he has done so far. Magic with marshmallows and cocoa. Brilliant!
I'll go upstairs now and continue reading it. |
