I have been browsing around the internet and discovered to my surprise that there are indaviduals out there who are selling Gospel tricks with biblical patter that they did not come up with or create themselves. In fact, what they are doing is taking someone else's copyrighted idea for a biblical application for a trick, changing the wording a little bit, and are selling it as if they created it. I have also noticed that some people are taking Gospel tricks which are offered for free from it's original source, re-wording them slightly, and then selling them for profit.

I don't know if this is an appropriate thing to be doing, but it doesn't sit well for me. I recently bought a Gospel magic e-book only to find that it contained tricks and patter that was taken from another source. No credit was given to it's original source, and the name of the tricks were changed. The methods and patter were the same.

I wouldn't mind hearing what others think of this practice.

I would think that warrents posting the names and web addresses of the offenders.

I also think stealing pretty much negates any label of "Christian" or "gospel" on both the trick and the individual.

Hi Dan,

That doesn't sit well with me either. Ethically and morally it's wrong to take what's not yours and sell it for profit. I believe if you want to reprint material and sell it, you should credit whoever owns the rights and/or the originator. Sounds like someone who did neither, and listed the effects under their own name, could be in for some legal trouble.

I've not seen the items you've referenced so it's difficult to be more specific. If it's as blatant as you described, what next step do you plan to take? Contact the publisher? Contact the originator or rights-owner? Just curious.

Ed- Dan hasn't said if the person publishing it was calling themselves a Christian or not. So I don't think we can judge that. I would label any trick a 'gospel' trick if someone wrote a gospel message to accompany it, whether or not the person writing it was a Christian themselves.

Just my thoughts.

I'm reluctant to name names or provide website links at this moment. I have made contact with one of the persons and I'm trying to contact the other. I think it would be only appropreate if I communicate with them first.

I have been looking to see if copyrights have been violated, but I've been told that if the person changed the wording enough that it won't violate any copyright laws. I'm checking to see if that's correct, and how much wording needs to be changed. Even if no copyright laws have been violated, I believe ethically that this is wrong.

As far as these indaviduals being christian, the one I am in contact with right now professes to be a christian. However, I don't think it really matters if one is a christian or not.

I wanted to bring attention to this as soon as I became aware of it to see if others are aware that this is going on. It may not be on a big scale, or I may have only scratched the surface, I don't know. I also don't want to be destroying anyone's reputation or good name prematurely without giving them an opportunity to explain their side to me.

Prudent, Dan.

Hay, did I just create a new name for you?
Maybe not.... Never mind.

Hi Dan:

Yes, I think you're handling this the correct way. Thanks for the information. I agree with your and Joe's thoughts.
