I am doing an outside festival and I start my show with 6-10 min of magic to music. My problem that I have is I usually use lots of silks and silks and outside shows do not go good together. Does anyone have any suggestions for effects that I could do to music that would outdoor safe? I currently will be doing the mouth coil, confetti bucket, sponge balls, I need more ideas, Thank you

Sponge balls also don't do that well sometimes outdoors due to wind.

Is this a stage show or close-up show?

Ropes are good. You can use silks with appearing and disappearing canes. Billiard ball routines done to music have done well. Linking rings can be done silent to music. There is just too much to list.

Yeah the confetti bucket might give you some related wind issues.

Likewise - Ropes, Rings, ball manipulations, cups & balls, jumbo chop cup, flash productions, card maniuplations and the like. I still do a couple of favorite silk effects and I have very small Velcro hook dots stitched to one corner of these silks so that they catch on my Lefler table surface. I don't have to worry about the wind carrying them off. It also makes it easier to grab the right color silk from a change bag without looking. The corners are hooked to a piece of Velcro felt sewn inside the lip of the bag. I always know where each silk is.

But, the wind is still an issue when I'm trying to handle and display the silks. Can't help you there, Amigo! Smile

A lot of silk routines are fine they just need a little reworking so they are always in a hand, a pocket, a prop or a gimmick.

With a little innovation you can weigh down card stands or flowerpots to make them windproof.

Silk magic can be done outside as I do it a lot for the festivals I perform. you just have to think about it a bit differentyl. Two things I use to help with this are as follows:

1) Get yourself a nice and small chest or case. I got a great and old looking one at Michael's crafts that looks magical. Place the silks hanging from the inside and draped over to the outside. then you can shut the lid and the silks will stay in place easily until you need them. They can beplaced back just as easily.

2) if you have a suitcase table, go to a fabric store and get yourself some black 9or whatever color matches your table) of elastic band. Place this into place on one side and expanded over the front to the other side. Then you can easily place a silk there and it will not go anywhere. it can be removed and placed back with ease and looks good as well.

Just 2 methods I use to be able to do silks outdoors.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I am going to keep my mismade flag routine in place but with the silk falling I may just have to cross my fingers and hope it doesn't go to far Smile Well if any one else has any other items that would go well with music and being soemthing I wouldnt have to chase all over the fair grounds for I encourage those thoughts. Maybe there is something I am not thinking about?

As far as I can think of, manipulations (the showy type done to music) fall into just a few major classes:

Silks
Cards
Coins
Billiard Balls
Thimbles
Linking Rings
Cigarettes
Doves

There could be a few more. In the olden days they were done with watches (the old-fashioned type). Production of alarm clocks from a hat used to be popular. Who knows, you could revive it.

Ropes can be done to music, but I think they go better with patter.

You might enjoy my post here, which tells about a festival performer who did some things I think you and the rest of us will want to stay away from:
