Possibly this explains it?
Assume x = y x2 = xy (multiply by x) x2 y2 = xy y2 (subtract y2) (x  y)(x + y) = y(x  y) (factor) x + y = y (divide by [x  y]) 2y = y (remember, x = y) 2 = 1 (divide by y) Of course, there's another division by zero there.
