The fact is that kids do love to see a bunny. However, I have had many times when a child is scared of the bunny and does not want to pet him anyway.
I used a bunny and dove in my show for 8 years with great success. Last year I decided to do a little test and pull them from the show for a few months. I found traveling without them to be soooooo much easier. No more having to sneak them into my hotel room, no more having to worry about them in the car while I was inside shopping or eating, and no more bad smell in my car. I could go on! It was just recently that I put them back into the show for no reason other than just doing it. What I found was that my show was no better with the animals. The kids still loved the show even without any animals and I hardly ever had anyone ask me, "are you going to make a bunny appear?" Now the bunny police are hunting us down! I don't want to drama of jumping through hoops for my bunny! I think I am going to turn a positive (I make a bired appear at the beginning and a live bunny at the end of my show) into a negative (No, I don't use animals as some children have allergies, are scared of the rabbit and your carpet can suffer). I know more performers that DON'T use animals than ones that do. They all seem to be happy! If you beat em'- join em' |

Skip, let me first say that I am horrified by the treatment of the sick animals at the plant in Souther California you mentioned and the workers who took part should be prosicuted, which they are being. The recall, though, was to see if any meat from sick animals was used and to my knowledge there was no sign of tainted meat and that the animals were destroyed and not processed. Your statement about tainted meat getting to schools on the East Coast is false and could lead to panic among some people.
As for the rabbits being used it is the same as preschools that show Disney vids to kids, it is against the regulations of the governing parties. If you want to use a rabbit without the USDA approval then you do so at your own risk, if you don't use critters then it isn't your problem. Rock on. |

My comment was based on the news reports here including such statements as 'Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,' Schafer said in a statement." I interpreted this to mean that the meat was or may well have been tainted and stand by my stated opinion that it should never have made it to the East coast without USDA intervention. Rock on.

I'm telling you that there was a 'belief' that it got into the system but the slaughter house stated those animals, which they fully admit were mistreated by the two men involved, were not put into the processing for consumption. There has been no tainted meat found. I've not eaten any read meat since that story came out because of the cruelity aspect, I now only eat cattle I personally know.
If you like I can give you all the address of the former head of the USDA inspection team for Texas, Oklohoma, and there abouts and you can go kick his arse, he has it coming even if he is an old geezer now. |

Aw, Santa...it was an off-the-cuff statement. I left off one word-"suspected". I'll admit that you're right. Can we let it rest and move on?

When I did use a rabbit, I would do the Rabbit Wringer in reverse making the rabbit appear. But I never heard about getting a license. My rabbit lived for over 11 years. I did not replace her for other reasons.
I emailed the USDA, they told me that the rules vary from state to state, but yes magicians using animals in their act need a license. They told me to contact my local office of the USDA to find out more details.

I didn't use a bunny in the bay area because of the tree huggers. Where I live now the place is full of bunnies so seeing one isn't a thrill for kids, most want to shoot and skin one.

I just called the Raleigh office, and they don't regulate birds, so Parrots & Doves aren't licensed. The cost seemed pretty low, they just want to inspect the facilities to make sure you are treating your animals well. Personally, I like the idea. ----Should the USDA do more to inspect our food, sure, that too.
On another note, I am amazed at all the negative comments about PETA. While I don't agree with everything they stand for, they have done a lot of good. I suggest you look into them a little before making comments, instead of listening to their distracters. There are a lot of us who feel animals should be treated well, and with respect. I think some of the natives had it right when they respected and asked forgiveness for the animals they killed. As for the comments about tree huggers, I find it amazing when virtually everyone acknowledges global warming that we all aren’t tree huggers. I am disappointed. |

The comment about tree huggers not liking bunnies in shows in San Francisco bothered you that much? Oh, I'm sorry widdle man...
Did I see someone who thinks the president is ending the USDA after magicians? You gotta be kidding, you should thank Capt kid for making you not seem the most off fellow. Hey, but don't mind me, I'm just a....detractor! One thing, what in the name of the blue moon does 'I find it amazing when virtually everyone acknowledges global warming that we all aren't tree huggers' mean? |

I think the main thing that I have an issue with is the "hand wash station". I've seen these things and you need a large panel van or pickup truck to transport it. I drive a large car and I certainly couldn't fit it in, along with my other equipment.
As for the comment about PETA, I have plenty of issues with them. They resemble a cult, not a charity, in how they operate. Those in charge of PETA are hypocrites. they oppose animal products for medical use, yet one of their leaders takes insulin injections for her diabetes. They say they oppose raising animals as pets, yet many of the leaders have pets. I could never support an organization that opposes raising domesticated animals as pets - it's an ignorant view that endangers many animal breeds. |
