I would like a list of all the versions of this effect, with brief explanations (if possible). Thank you very much.

Are you talking of chink-a-chink ?

I'm not familiar with Chink-a-chink. I'm talking about four coin assemblies without cards or other means of covering the coins (I believe that "no cover" versions are a lot more magical). I have seen one a long time ago in an "X-files" episode, "The Amazing Maleeni", with Ricky Jay and Jonathan Levit. Jonathan Levit performs a no-cover matrix effect there (if I remember correctly).

I am not aware of any coin assemblies with nothing covering the coins. All I know need you to cover the coins with your hands. Though it would be cool to stare at a close up pad that had coins dissappearing and appearing before my very eyes with nothing touching them.
Dean Dill's videos has a lot of coin assemblies on them. |

I recall a cute thing with 'chinese' coins and no cover at all where the coins all scuttle to one corner. It was in a book published in the late 1970s. It may have been a gag trick but that was the ONLY time i saw anything without covers. Might have been early Jay Sankey or Paul Harris.

Jesus, I'm so silly. When I said no cover, I meant covering coins only with your hands (not with cards or something). I hope that clarified the issue a little.

Okay Ivan,
Around here we know works by their inventor and the book the work was published in. The folks who do TV usually are NOT the ones who invent stuff HERE IN AMERICA since our media are very glamorous and the clever people are not always the most pretty. The trick was probably David Roth's version of the classic 'chink a chink' using coins. Over the last twenty five years since David published his routine there have been many clever variations on the method. There have also been a FEW very clever improvements to the actual method. Just so you know, the guy who posted above is one of the top coinmen, David Neighbors.

JonTown, thanks for the info. By the way, I'm aware of the facts stated in your post and know that Jonathan Levit most likely hasn't invented the effect. I just said that he performed it and it was mentioned to serve as an example of what I had in mind. I don't live under a rock, you know.
As for Mr. David Neighbors being one of the top coinmen, I apologize for being so ignorant. (I'm a card guy myself, so you have to forgive me) ![]()

Ivan --
For a handling that lends a "hands-off" appearance to the Roth chink-a-chink routine, try Michael Ammar's Shadow Coins (published in his lecture notes and also available on one of his videos; go to http://www.ammarmagic.com). By the way, Jonathan Townsend who answered your query, above, is himself a major coin guy. Cheers, Jerry |

Thank you very much, jerdunn. It's certainly a nice feeling, having a question answered by authorities on the matter.

Phillipe Fiahlo (spelling?) performed a cool hands off matrix at the first desert seminar around 1980. Fred Kaps was to be the guest of honor but he was sick and sent Phillipe instead. Besides doing a rocks over the head a la Slydini where he put his hands over the spec's ears as the rocks landed, he did a memorable Chink a Chink with chinese coins.
Phillipe wore a turban and had some strange music playing. Four chinese coins were laid out in the "matrix" formation. He would indicate where he wanted a coin to travel but it would travel to a different place - VISIBLY! The coins simply moved around by themselves. After being unsuccessful several times as coins moved to the wrong location, he finally hammered a nail through the offending coin to prevent it from moving. Then ALL three of the other coins simultaneously moved across to the nailed coin for the big ending. It was way cool! Mike

Chris Kenner has a version where his hands never touched the surface as well. I hear that Chad Long has a very cool One handed version of the effect. Has anyone seen it?

There is an effect on one of the Ammar vids called Shadow Coins which is a cool hands only matrix. I'm not sure which one but I think it's the "Icebreakers" video.

My goodness Mike, what a vivid description of, what seemed to be, a hilarious AND magical coin assembly. Does this person still live?

Dan Fleshman has a good no cards coin assembly on (I think) his second video.
Again, there are no heel slides, and both hands can be shown empty (because they are!) after each phase. |
