Hey guys, I was jus wondering, Does anyone here have any experience with an abbotts dove vest?? Are the pockets angled right and how good is the material? Is it Satin?? Also, I notice in the abbotts website that the vest cannot button up like most vests...It can't be that its a free hanging vest right?? Any answers?? I'm thinking of purchasing one...

Kyle, vests have been discussed quite a few times here. Dove vests are not meant to be buttoned up. They are supposed to be invisible to the audience. Dove vests are not part of a 3 piece suit. If you buttoned it up, you wouldn't be ablet to access the pockets. Here's a link to a previous discussion about vests. There are several links within this topic that should answer all of your questions.

If you do purchase one, be sure to wash it in hot water before you have it fabricated to fit you. The reason is to get rid of it shrinking before it is too late.

Kyle,
Why not just purchase dove pockets and pin them or have them sewn into whatever top you want? Rob |

Kyle,
The pockets are straight, not angled. No its not satin, though you can add some packing tape inside the pockets to make them slick, as Tony Clark suggested for pockets in one of his videos. No the vest does not button up or close in the front, this is something that just hangs on you, and is concealed by your coat. The audience does not see or is not aware of the vest. I use one of these myself, I find its better for me using multiple costumes, I don't need pockets sewn or pinned in each jacket or coat I use. I also just prefer the way the vest hangs, the birds feel like they hang closer to my body and I think it looks better than pockets. The choice between pockets and a vest is really a personal choice. I had many older local dove workers tell me not to use a vest, they said pockets were the "right" way to do things. I was actually surprised how adamant they were about this. Having used a vest for some time now, again I'd say its really just a matter of personal preference. I prefer the vest to pockets. Some guys try a vest and prefer pockets still. I'd say try one and see how it works out for you, how do you feel with it? Me, I feel a lot more comfortable performing with the vest so its definitely the right choice for me, and my costuming choices. Hope this helps... Steven |

Thanks Steven! I'm in the midst of getting my dove costume done together with dove vest. I will be trying the vest method out...but for now, as I wait, I've got pinned on pockets!

Hey Kyle,
I've only ever used pinned in pockets. They're very versatile and can be adjusted at any time. Good luck with your dove act. Rob |
