They laid their fourth egg two days after the third one.

There you go then! After 3-4 weeks you should take the eggs away from them. This can be quite difficult, but the doves will soon get over it and lay some more.

There is no reason to leave the eggs with the parents for 3-4 weeks. They are not fertile and should be removed. The doves won't miss them and they will lay more very soon.

I guess you're right Dave - I just leave them as they always seem sad when I take them away - as if they don't know they are infertile!

It takes about 5 seconds for the birds to get over losing and egg, even it is fertile. If they were sad from losing the eggs, leaving them there for weeks would only make the situation worse. Doves are neither sad nor happy. They may be content with their surrondings but I wouldn't worry about the sad/happy feeling.

Ok. Thanks Dave - that's good to know.

If your doves are kept outside, removing the eggs sooner also helps avoid problems with vermin who want to steal them.

As an aside, if you want to assign human emotion to the infertile egg situation, convince yourself that you're doing the birds a favor instead of promoting false hope. Smile

that's funny. Good point. I already disposed the eggs. The doves didn't care
