Well, I may regret this but there it goes, anyway...
I certainly love Mr. Williams IMPROVEMENT of "The Close-Up Illusion". It looks way more magical than with Mr. Jennings' original handling (and it looked pretty magical already!). However, it's just an improved handling of another effect (as brilliant as it may be), and I'm not quite sure that's a reason to put out a one-effect DVD. I can understand one-effect DVDs like Wayne Houchin's "Indecent" or some other examples I really don't feel like listing right now. But this one, seems to me like putting out a new DVD because I came up with a new (VERY CLEVER) display or switch that I use while performing Bill Goodwin's "The Queens", or something like that. I sincerely believe that Mr. Williams handling is way superior than the original and I really loved it when I first watched his DVD. As a matter of fact, I will most likely use his handling if I ever perform it again. Nevertheless, I was quite surprised when Chris posted that it had been released as a single-effect DVD. Specially when you can find it along with another half a dozen gems in Mr. Williams' "Miracles for Mortals (Vol.1)"

Double-lift, again it comes down to trying to reach everyone with this material....and all the points are vaild and I'm glad were having this discussion.... it will likely change how we handle this kind fo thing again.....
but we feel we can do a better job of getting all the kozmomagic material to the magic community by continuing to promote it...but again, there are certainly valid points here and I'm glad were discussin them... listen guys, I'm a street performer...who happened to also be a broadcast engineer...i don't have all the answers so as with all producers in magic, we are learning....this is a work in progress, trying to do better jobs of producing material and marketing it so it succeeds....and success is not easily acheived in this community...where a download is but seconds away and replicating of DVD's is just so easy...hell, even the artwork is easily copied...and now we have the guys who don't care about the work of the artists and are renting dvd's...which might be legal but is certainly not ethical...this is a tough business and every penny counts.. over the next few years big names will disappear from this realm of the business...christ, reel magic quarterly is only $10 but I see it for sale all the time on the used dvd section here....and people wanting to buy it when it only costs $10....they are trying to save 2 or 3 dollars...its amazing to me the lack of respect that these prodcuts get and the artists of these products so for kozmomagic to produce something special like the Slydini "as I recall" dvd set there is a huge risk that we will lose money on it....and this hurts magic....slydini "as I recall" was special but we may never be able to attack a project like that again because of these things I'm talking about and how it effects our business...so we have to continue to try to maximize our profits on every project that's produced...its survival I appreciate all of your business... as a side note lonnie chevrie is coming to town next week and were going to shoot some new material...he has some killer stuff plus he has re-done his juan pablo switch and its so clean you wont beleive it were looking at new material from dan tong this year and also justin miller has some real world non-gimmicked material that just kills and were also working with eric jones on some fantastic coin material so its a busy year for kozmomagic\ koz |

I worked with a guy years ago that used to go on rants about "clowns" from other departments and it always made me laugh. I shouldn't use the term because I get flooded with PM's from "real" clowns that feel hurt that I slammed them. I appologize to anyone I may have offended. And, while I've never met Koz ( tedb) I've gotten so much material and joy from his products that I get a bite defensive about Kozmo Magic. He's brought people to our attention that would have never been seen by many of us. The Reel Magic Quarterly is one of the greatest values in Magic. I refer to them often ( just watched the first one with Paul Harris again ) and would never part with them. On a side note about posting: Years ago I used to make posts that were just plain dumb and not acurate ( not knowing the business side of Magic ). A good friend wrote me to tell me that he valued my opinion, but my tone was actually hurting magic, not helping it. I hoped I've improved. I love spirited debate and people expressing opinions but we also need to look at the bigger picture. Oh and the "I Hate David Copperfield Trick" kills. And...I Would NEVER release a DVD with my 10 best. One trick DVD's, that contain a KILLER effect is all we need or should get for the small price we pay. There will be folks still releasing multi trick DVD's, so it's just my opinion ( and I don't release DVD's ).

Hi Chris,
I am glad you responded, because I did not mean to offend and I do see your interpretation and I wanted to ensure that you received my apology; I do hope to make friends and not enemies here. I think in general I agree with you about single trick releases. I think one good worker is worth $30-50; the market is just used to compilations. I am with you, if I had tricks good enough to sell, I would sell them one at a time. Have you seen the Chris Priest DVD's-sponge ball routine, coin routine and card routines (just 2); each on their own DVD; all workers. I think they are great and worth way more than any 10 crappy effects put on some DVD's (unfortunately, that I have-I will not name names, unless someone asks me:) ) |

John, great to hear back from you.
Yes, the Chris Priest DVD's are execllent. The Protons ( the one I have ) is a worker routine. I'm still looking at it and haven't posted yet. This was a good thread because we got some got some inside info about the retail business that I didn't know about. The guys that put material out do want to hear from customers. And Geoff Williams is a monster performer. Any material put out with him on it is m ust have.

I have all three of Chris Priest's DVD's and I like them; they are routined very well and great magic for laypeople. You won't wow anyone at the magic meeting (well, maybe a couple), but laypeople will be floored.

I really have enjoyed “Miracles for Mortals”, both DVDs
(I am working on three of these routines, modified to fit me, and use them from time to time.) I initially did think the single trick on the “Copperfield” DVD would be something newer or different so I put it in my “shopping” cart with some other items. Just wanted to make sure this was really different so I luckily watched the trailer. Seemed like the same trick as on “Miracles for Mortals” so I removed the item from my shopping card. Well as luck would have it the item didn’t get removed from my cart. I actually ended up somehow with “2” of the DVDs on order. It’s good I was ordering from a good dealer as I was able to email and mention the mistake I made and all was taken care of. Chris I missed your use of “chowder heads”.

Considering the useless garbage so often released as individual effects it is nice to see a really good trick come out. No one is holding a gun to anyones head so if they want to make the smarter move and get the whole DVD good for them, if they want one trick they can do it as well.

I completely agree with quite a bit of what has been said on this thread regarding the quality of one trick effects currently on the market( by the always insightful MagicSanta) and also about the concern with re-releasing material that can be purchased in a compilation set or tome. I personally like the idea of having a variety to choose from. If I don't want to spend a ton of money on a bunch of tricks, what's the harm in spending a fraction on one really sweet trick?
However, those of us who decide to purchase the whole shibang(did I spell that right?), get the benefit of gleaning knowledge from the rest of the full product that the cheapskates lose out on......lol

I'll review it. This trick consist of three cards being showed and the cards melt through each other in an extremely visual way. I'm talking you can be inches away and it looks great. It is very easy to do and you can make up your own gaff (yes kids, since cards don't really melt through each other you do need to help the magic along). There is three phases taught, it is easy to do, you can be up and running in a few seconds of work and practicing a few times. It is done slowly and it is a stunner to lots of people. I think that for card magic there is only one trick from a visual stand point that comes close to this and that is Hyper Warp by Wes James...

When I first read this trick in Falanga's book, I passed on it. Why? I'M DYSLEXIC-how could I understand it? lol.
Then I saw it on a video. And..I knew why I passed. I thought it was silly. Then..a close friend told me he used it and it killed. So...I learned it. I didn't like learning it because I didn't like it. And then I performed it. People turn their heads in all postiions trying to understand it. It's was Geoff's version I use and it in fact kills.

Like it has been mentioned. One trick DVDs way outsell compilation DVDs. This is an interesting lesson in marketing. I suggest checking out Al Reis's excellent treatise on the subject called "Focus." There is quite a bit of useful info in there one could apply to any area of life - like performing.
I was talking to a friend of mine who has a compilation video and a single effect video out. He thought as many do that it would be more a better deal and a better selling point to sell another compilation video. I told him the above info and showed how illusionist and theory11 are making a killing using this exact business model - one dvd, one effect. I challenged to call up his dealer and ask them how much of each they were selling. The single effect was far outselling the compilation. I don't know about anyone else but I'd rather put the time and money in producing a single effect on a DVD and selling tons of those than spending ten times as much time and effort to sell a tenth. Sounds like the ABCs of running a business to me. Williams compilation dvds hold no interest for me but I might pick up the single effect one as that is about all I purchase anymore. I like a focused approach to one effect. Lovick's Switch is another example of this. A whole volume dedicated to a single type of effect. I'm sure if it had been a book of Lovick's magic it would have sold a lot less. Yet if it had been a book with only Lovicks bill switch routine then it might have sold even more than "Switch" did. (And then again maybe not.) While we are on the topic I get a real kick out of Theory11's marketing campaign. Sell one trick items on a dvd and download. You know those guys are making serious bank. The best part: There is NO theory11. (I actually think it is package one effect in a dvd and make a load of cash.) And just to stay really on topic. That is a very nice version of Jenning's "Close-Up Illusion." |

Denny, of Denny and Lee's, has talked about the compilation vs single trick in one of his essays.
He stated that he took a trick book and picked several of tricks in the book and sold them as an individual trick. When the customer asked to buy the trick he told them yes I will sell it to you, but it is in the book so and so for a few dollars more. Basically everyone just bought the individual trick rather that the book. Denny could only conclude that the average purchaser wants everything given to them up front and not have to go into the details. That it is a pure psychological reason.
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.
