There is no flash restoration ala classic Anderson. The beauty of this effect is that it can be performed impromptu with no preparation and the spectator can examine the newspaper afterwards.
I have long performed the G.A. version and for awhile, I used this version in its place with my old patter. I missed the flash restoration, but there's no gluing and no worries about gimmicks breaking at the wrong time. Here's my review of the effect: http://magic.about.com/od/magicreview/fr/051608teardown.htm -Wayne

I'm not a full time magician.. though I used to be.
I wasn't fooled by this from the very first tear. I used to use this method for something (I've forgotten more magic than most will ever learn) back in the early 80's... and it wasn't successful back then. I can see how with the right handling it might fool from a distance.. but the demo link from above was more like a "how to" than a fooling performance. |

I perform TearDown on a regular basis, especially in my Kids Shows (They restore the Newspaper in their own hands and I look amazed when they do it, expecting to find all the torn bits fall to the floor).
I end my kids show presentation with a black hand towel for a good laugh. It's the only routine that I use pun type jokes in my kids act, and thus one of the only times I look up at the parents. For added misdirection, the child is timed appropriately to come up and try to restore the paper by themselves (this one is a parent fooler and has been commented on favorabley plenty of times). There's no reason why a fast, flashy type restoration can't be done with this as well, find the inner fold and with a shake the newpaper pops open, it can be done just as quick or as slow as you like. Teardown has also worked well doing a stand up magic show, if I'm asked to do something less kiddy. Not that I've done this table hopping. For the guy at the bar who asked me to show him a trick, there was no difference to him between this and the G Anderson Tear (this was reportedly the most talked about impromptu effect I performed on that occation). I'm not saying it's a T.V. trick, but I've seen another magician do a prepped flash version starting with an imbarassingly huge packet bulge on the box recently.

With a little prep ahead of time ( 5 mins) The newspaper could be entirely examinable afterwards couldn't it?
Ps Paul is amazing isn't he? |
